Gmail app vs. HTC mail w/HTC sense

id think so, since the gmail app gets mail pushed while the htc mail app checks for new mail at intervals

SMS Unread Count - Android app on AppBrain

This is free and has 3 widgets (Dialer, Gmail and SMS) that you use. It will add a counter for your gmail, missed calls and SMS
 
i just moved from iphone3 to htc desire hd on andriod :)
turns out gmail push email doesnt work once the screen has turned off.
push email is critical for me to have.
i then went to htc mail.
this worked well (with just a few minutes of testing done) but the email address that it sends from is gmail, while i wanted bird@kiwibird.com etc.
if i setup account on htc mail with email bird@kiwibird.com instead if gmail, gtc mail closes down and crashed each time.
can any one make recommendations.
my mild concern with htc mail is if its not true push email, but scans every x seconds, this will increase data and battery useage. Does anyone have comments on this?
i tried touchdown but cant figure out how to send an email to someone not in the contacts lists.

I'd love to be able to do this, as well - without having to set up a gmail account to forward everything to. That just seems like a big pain.

If you mean HTC Mail, then yes, but not until the new sense comes out. You can do this with at least 2 Exchange accounts (have not tried more and both are push). I have used on IncDoes ROM.
 
Forgive me if I just hijacked this thread, but it is related....
Any way to increase the size of individual contact icons in HTC Sense? The scrolling People Widget has good size photos of contacts, but when I try to add an individual contact icon, the photo is sooo small. thanks Or a good contact app that does the same?

PS- Anyway to add an "add contact" shortcut to the screen in HTC Sense? I hate having to always go into the People app to do that. thanks

No. Not using HTC Sense. Using other ROMs perhaps, but not with Sense.

Not using HTC Mail or Gmail. The only one I know of is K-9 Mail. I have 4 accounts set up with that. You can even color code each account if you wanted.

not sure if this had been answered since I never read one so here's what I found and it worked

The Gmail Exchange ActiveSync server settings for accessing incoming messages and online folders in an Exchange-enabled email program, cell phone or mobile device are:
  • Gmail Exchange ActiveSync server address: m.google.com
  • Gmail Exchange ActiveSync domain: google
  • Gmail Exchange ActiveSync user name: Your full Gmail address (e.g. me@gmail.com)
  • Gmail Exchange ActiveSync password: Your Gmail password
  • Gmail Exchange ActiveSync TLS/SSL required: yes

Arcvhing just "moves" an e-mail to All Maill. Which can also be done in any standard mail app.

Labels in Gmail, Folders in Gmail. You cannot add labels because their is no Copy options (which is what adding labels does).

You can search in HTC Mail.

I use HTC Mail because it's UI is much nicer. Google don't understand UIs (except for Android). It's also annoying with Gmail you have to have Push.

I don't seem to have any issues with getting push email for GMail. Works the same with screen on or off for me.

HTC mail uses polling for checking mail. So if you have it set to poll often, it will use more battery than push. Now if you set it to poll every six hours it would probably use less... but who does that (might as well be manual). My guess, and I have no data to back this up, is that polling every hour probably doesn't use anymore battery than push... but then it could take an hour to get notified of an email.

The thing is, if you need ActiveSync support, you would still need HTC Mail (or Touchdown) since GMail doesn't do ActiveSync. So then it becomes two apps running... GMail with push for your GMail account, and HTC Mail for Exchange.

But it gets worse... HTC Mail and GMail don't play nice when it comes to Sent and Deleted mail. There really is no way to fix that with HTC Mail currently. So I use the GMail app for GMail access, and HTC Mail for Exchange. Sucks... but works.

Or use K-9 for both because it uses Push, and it works with both GMail and Exchange, and you can have multiple accounts on the screen at once if you wanted. This way you only use one app instead of two.

K-9 uses WebDav to connect to Exchange. So if your organization requires ActiveSync, it will do you no good. Plus, WebDAV is going away in Exchange 2010 (to be replaced with EWS). Since most orgs are still on Exchange 2003 or 2007, it isn't an issue now though.
 
When using the stock email, is there a way to have the old messages show up under each individual contact email history without keeping it in the In-box?
I like being able to click on a contact than message history to ready emails from that particular contact, but don't want hundreds in the in-box all the time. thanks
 
This is a good thread. However, when using exchange active synch I cannot get the download frequency to save to "as items arrive".

Any ideas on how I do this?
