gmail audible notification off

Is there a way to turn off the audible notification when I get a new gmail?
When I first bought the eris, I would get email audible notification all the time, during sleep and work hours. Email is not important to me.

I now have gmail notification disabled. So no more annoying audible notifications. But I would still like to get a notification icon without the sound. Is this possible? maybe install a 3rd party email app?

Go to the Gmail app => menu=>settings=>select ringtone=>silent
