Gmail Error Message

Hello. I am having trouble with an error message and don't know how to fix it. I would appreciate if anybody can figure out what's causing it or how to fix it. Thank you :)

I have had my phone (Verizon Droid Incredible 2) since December with one gmail account and one aol account on it. Last weekend, I installed a new aol account and deleted the original one (I was receiving too much spam). Ever since then I've been receiving an error message from time to time that Gmail is unable to send mail. But...

I have been perfectly able to send and receive mail with gmail without any problems. And the notification comes at random times when I'm not even trying to send anything from gmail (for instance, in the middle of the night).

I tried taking the battery out but that didn't help. I clicked on the error message which prompted me to click "finish" (or another option - can't remember what it said, probably "cancel"), I clicked "finish" but the problem continued. Another time I clicked "update password", re-entered my password then clicked "finish" and it said 401 error.

I brought my phone to a Verizon store, a tech support person downloaded Google K9 and recommended using that instead of the regular Gmail icon (app / widget?). That didn't solve the problem, plus every time I received email gmail and K9 both rang which was irritating. So I went to a second Verizon store to to fix the secondary problem (double notification with K9) and ask another tech support person if he knows what might be causing the error message and how to fix it. He uninstalled K9 for me, updated whichever of my apps needed that, but was unable to figure out what was causing the random error messages. He said the only other thing to do is a factory reset which means starting out from scratch like a brand new phone. I didn't want to do that as it took me a long time to get it the way I like it and getting it that way again is very intimidating. I just learned of the MyBackup app which might be helpful if I end up doing a factory reset - does anybody have any experience using MyBackup?

Thank you very much for your help.

Unfortunately, doing a factory restore may be the only way to get rid of the error. I don't have any experience with MyBackup, but it looks like you can use Pro for 30 days.

If not the only way to get rid of it, it certainly would be the quickest.

Thank you for your response. I was hoping there was another way beside a factory restore. I'm not very tech savvy so getting my phone set up the way it is now from scratch is a little scary. The only apps I really use are Mozilla Firefox and Google Voice but having to re-do all my bookmarks and websites I'm automatically logged in (and rearrange / hide most of the icons the phone started out with) is a daunting task. Hopefully that's what MyBackup is for. I guess my next step is to research that.

Wish me luck...

There is a gmail email stuck in my Mail's outbox. Apparently, I accidentally sent my husband a picture on Monday from gmail (which I normally only use for work) and it's been trying to send it ever since then, notifying me each time sending fails. I might have deleted the picture after sending (our dog doing something I found amusing which isn't so amusing anymore in light of all the trouble it's caused ) and I wonder if that could be part of the problem.

I googled that issue, found that other people have had similar problems (stuck gmails) and a handful of solutions (none of which worked): save offending message to "drafts" then delete (it came right back), force close, clear cache, uninstall updates. The one suggestion I didn't try was to clear Gmail's data because of the warning I will lose all info (afraid of what that includes and doing more damage) and because the problem seems to be coming from Gmail within the Mail app as opposed to the Gmail app (does that make any sense?).

It looks like I'll be making a trip back to the Verizon store, let the professionals handle it. At least I now know what to ask them to fix. Hopefully the third time's a charm.
