Gmail hacked?

MetaX

Newbie
Did anybody else's gmail get hacked, I couldn't access my account for a few days and found this e-mail in my account sent from myself.

Hi.
As part of our test, we had to hack many gmail accounts starting with "sa" and "ex".
We have not viewed any of your emails nor have we sent emails.
We have set automatic bots which it chats with random gmail users in chat box.
The robots have not sent anything inappropriate, so that won't be a problem to you.
We are sorry that you have not been able to reach to your gmail account for certain time of period.
Please note that we only did this for educational and testing purpose only.

Thank you for being patient with us and we hope that you enjoy your gmail account as you did before.

Thank you,

My gmail got hacked a couple days ago and spam sent out to all my contacts. My gmail name is the same as my user name on here.

It was unrelated to this though.

Maybe it wasn't hacked but you gave your Gmail password to some social network service? I see this happening often, when people sign up for a social network service, and the services asks you to "log in to your email" to invite your friends. What's happening is that the social network service exports your contacts once you give it your log in data, and sends spam to all your contacts.

Not really a case of hacking but rather an email user giving his / her log in information to a 3rd party service.

Did you have an account with Gawker media perhaps? Leaked Gawker passwords cause problems on Twitter, Gmail - Yahoo! News

Gawker usernames / passwords were hacked and leaked online. If you used the same usernames / passwords with Gmail and other services then your account was vulnerable.

I never use the same usernames / passwords on more than one site / service.

I would be FWD'ing that email to google and see what they think.. I wouldnt think no email site would willfully allow someone to hack their customer accounts with all the sensitive info that can be in peoples in boxes. I hope you changed your password ASAP.

That's bogus.. for sure.. NOT from Google..

weird..

It never stated it was from google at all.....

It could be 100% legit, especially since they are not directly asking you for anything, or wanting you to click a link. I have a friend who has a SA address, she didn't get this msg. But without a doubt change your password.

It never stated it was from google at all..... .

The original poster asked: "Gmail Hacked?"
He is wondering if someone 'hacked' the email account. He also indicated he got an email 'from' himself that HE didn't send.

If the account wasn't hacked, then GOOGLE sent it, or some other authorized Google agent sent that email. (which, by the way, isn't the case here).

So, my point is: the original poster's question seems to indicate he is not entirely sure this was a hack, which would mean Google was involved.

Also, Dark Jedi said:

"I wouldnt think no email site (Google) would willfully allow someone to hack their customer accounts with all the sensitive info ..."

My statement agrees with Dark Jedi that THIS WAS NOT GOOGLE, and I am making it clear to the original poster that this is a HACK.

There is NOTHING "legit" about this... It may not be too nefarious, but it's at the least a poor practical joke.

It needs to be reported to Google and of course, as stated by you and others, the password should be changed.. along with checking the 'recovery' email address in the settings..

Nowhere are they representing themselves as Google.. Which then make it legit, a joke, or an attempt at a small scale cyber terrorism. Judging by the fact that the OP was actually not able to access his email... it was probably a legit hacking team that found a security exploit...

"....or some other authorized Google agent..."

"Legit hacking team?" uhh... riiiiiight..

Where do you get anything about "some other authorized Google Agent" ?

A team of hackers who hack something and then say that they are a hacking team would make them legit. As they are in no way portraying themselves as anything other then what they are.

Ok, just want to make sure I get this straight:

They are possibly a "legitimate hacking team" because they 'hack something and then say they are hacking team.' ?? And because they didn't 'portray themselves as anything other then what they are.' ??

Let's breakdown their email:

As part of our test, we had to hack many gmail accounts..."

They had to? NO, They 'CHOSE' to hack the account.

We have not viewed any of your emails nor have we sent emails.

"Except for the ONE we sent you... Honest, you can trust us... "

Never mind our trouble using proper grammar/sentence structure with the English language. We are professionals.

We are sorry that you have not been able to reach to your gmail account for certain time of period. Please note that we only did this for educational and testing purpose only.

Well, we aren't really THAT sorry.. I mean, who cares you may have had some important things to do with your email account.. Remember WE ARE A LEGITIMATE HACKING TEAM.

Thank you for being patient with us and we hope that you enjoy your gmail account as you did before.

You WERE PATIENT, WEREN'T you?

Honestly, I don't even know what you are arguing with me about? Lol..

You said "That's bogus.. for sure.. NOT from Google.. " And I simply said nobody stated it was from Google in the first place. Which was pretty obvious anyways I thought...

Ok if I break in to your home and rummage through your things make a few local phone calls on your contact list. then leave a note and state I did it to check for possible security holes. DOes it make it any more right? You wouldnt get pissed?

Many people have sensitive stuff in their email accounts and I know I would be mad if I found out my email was hacked and I had no control over it.

Maybe the people that did the hacking got scared and sent the email to try and keep the people from reporting to gmail about the hacking. I would think google would have their own people on staff to seek out security problems.

Why didnt these hackers setup their own email accounts and see if they couldnt do the hacking this way. When people hacks and sets bots up to carry conversations with other people sounds real fishy to me. I mean come on why would they set bots up if all they wanted to do was see if they could hack the system.

Seriously? I would love to see anywhere where I said this was right or back up their actions. I simply said the email was obviously not from google. When I say it is legit, I simply mean the email was in no way a misrepresentation of who the sender was. If fact I suggested he change his password also. I really dont understand how either of you misconstrued this at all.

Maybe you have a different meaning for "legit" ?

Here is the one I go by:
Legitimate: Being in compliance with the law; lawful: or being in accordance with established or accepted patterns and standards:

Your statements indicate you feel this could be "legit." I guess I made what I felt was a reasonable leap in thinking that if you are saying this is legitimate, then you are saying it's 'right' or 'backing it up' at least to some degree.. I am not suggesting you are advocating the action necessarily, but that you are saying it is basically "OK" because this "could be 100% legit."

It is my opinion they are FAR FROM "legit"..

OK, the horse has been kicked enough.. :)

legitimate can also just mean a valid statement. It is not always used in context with being lawful.

lawful: or being in accordance with established or accepted patterns and standards:

 I can look up random words you say in the dictionary too.

What is pretty funny is that all I said was the email was not from google. And apparently you have taken my original quote as a shot at your internet manhood and turned this into a battle of semantics. You can have this one, you need it much more then I do apparently..

But how do you you know that they are who they say they are in the e mail. Nothing about that e mail can be called legit. It was a poor choice of words on your part. I can say I am brad pitt in an mail. So does that make it legit?

It was a poor choice of words on your part.

BINGO.

We draw our conclusions by the words used... I explained the use of mine on my first response to your expressed confusion with my statement.. You didn't seem to 'get it.'

Internet Manhood? funny... How old are you? 16-17? I should have taken that into account..

oops.. sorry about you articulate teenagers out there.. I don't include you in that group... :)

OK,..

No I would say you are acting like a child in this statement. You could of said hey we just disagree on what I ment and left it at that. You know legit might have not been the right choice of word in your post. with your out lash you don't like to have people to question you.

Not at all, I would admit if I am wrong, no problem with being wrong.. lol. But you both just want to randomly focus on the word legit, and again thats fine if thats how you want to spin a simple unrelated comment. But originally all I said was this email was not from google and I get a wall of text back lol. And I am not the one who took it all personal in the first place. In fact I found the whole thing pretty funny. ;)
