Help gmail not syncing

I have finally adopted gmail as my main email account, and started using the 'gmail' app. But for some reason, new emails aren't auto-sync'd. The option is ticked on the phone's auto sync setting. I have to manually sync to pick up new emails which is no good. Can anyone help me auto sync my gmail? Thanks.

two fixes I've found on the net and am still trying:
1. clear the cache in Settings>Applications>ManageApplications>All>Gmail
2. if low on space, gmail app stops syncing correctly. So, uninstall/move stuff onto SD card from phone. Also, I'm not 100% on this, but I think that you can clear the data from "applications" like "com.htc.socialnetwork.provider" and things will probably still be ok...this is what I had to do to create enough room.

Am annoyed by the lack of internal space on my Desire (original), and also at the number of apps that are obliged to install to the phone and cannot sit on the SD card (eg. google maps, gmail, facebook, Internet etc)

Thanks. I will try clearing the cache and let you know. I've recently reached my limit and had to decide which apps to uninstall - v annoying!

Regarding the internal memory shortage, there are 2 good news:

1) When you have Gingerbread on Desire (expected soon officially), you can move more things to SD card. This should open more free space for you.

2) Root your phone, get a custom ROM on it and forget about internal storage issue.
