Help Gmail notifications - slow, non-existant

I'm finding tha Gmail notifications are very slow to appear on my O2 Xperia S, and sometimes do not appear at all. E.g. I just went into the Gmail app, did a manual refresh, and only then did an email (that was still unread) appear that was received on my other devices 20 minutes earlier.

As a comparison, my HTC Desire on Vodafone receives Gmail notifications more or less instantly.

Gmail is set to sync in Account And Sync on both phones.

I've no idea whether it is the different phone or the different network that is causing this.

Does anyone have any ideas about the cause, a cure, or is anyone getting a similar issue?

I've not had any problems with syncing. In fact, using Gmail I get the alert on my phone within 1-2 seconds of the same email arriving on my Mac or BlackBerry.

I'd say it's working fine, but it could be down to network issues, a problem with Gmail at the time etc.
