Help GMail problem

I can't see my emails on my HTC Wildfire with GMail. The phone indicates a number of unread emails, but won't show them to me.
I suspect it's a storage problem; I have run the SD & phone storage wizard and done a de-frag, but the problem remains.
Can I delete emails/labels on my phone but retain them on my PC?
Does anyone have any suggestions, please?

I've now managed to fix it; GMail won't synch when storage is low. I had to delete an app that couldn't be moved to the SD card.

Thanks for this - I was wondering why my phone wouldn't sync my emails with my SF2.
