Gmail Push only when sync turned on?

This is probably a silly question, but does push for Gmail only work if the sync is on? The reason why I ask this is because I never get emails when I turn the sync off. As soon as I turn it on, I get the email pushed to my device. Anyone can answer my question?

You don't need sync on to have push email, but if you have sync off, you need to "refresh" when you open Gmail in order to have it update. Otherwise you will only see things from the last "refresh". When you open Gmail just press "menu", and then "refresh".

That doesn't make sense. I never get notified that there is an email when sync is turned off. Thats the whole point of push right?

I know push works without sync as I have trillian running with Push (which is using the 2.2 api) and it pushes anytime I get an instant message.

I only turn sync off as I don't want to eat into my data plan, 500MB is stingy.. and because HTC sync is on and so forth, it will just eat and eat.

Hmm. It's working for me. I don't have auto sync on, but I get new emails when I open the app. Maybe I'm not understanding you. You want it to automatically get emails with sync off? That I don't think can happen. I thought you meant will you still get new email when you check for new email with sync off. That works, but like I said you have to manually check. Sorry if I confused you.

Ar.. makes more sense!

Yea when you open the app yea you get the new emails, but I thought that it will notify you that you have new email when sync is off. I guess that doesn't work when sync is turned off..

Bit weird though as I know it is possible for it to work, i.e. Trillian IM. Hmm...
