Help Gmail still not syncing reliably on EVO...

This issue comes and goes from day to day. When it stops pushing my new messages it seems like the only way to get it back up and running is to go into the account and sync settings and hit sync now for my gmail account. I have background data and auto sync turned on and all that.

I'm not running a task killer anymore, but is it possible that when I did I killed something I wasn't supposed to that wouldn't come back on even after a reboot of the phone? What apps or services should I ensure are running to make sure my account stays up to date?

I know this isn't a google issue since new mail still comes to my computer and iPad (exchange activesync) instantly.
 
Talk? Really? every so often I check my running services and stop that one...I've read that in several battery 101 articles. It's never seemed to correlate with gmail working properly...
 
Yeah, they're sending a message thru Talk to trigger the GMail sync - something like that.

So yeah - Talk may babble on the net a little - and then consume some resources and suck up some juice - but it's required to support GMail sync.

FWIW - They published that advice at Sprint before the 1.47.yadda update - and since then, I've left Talk on and haven't really suffered at all on power.

Gotta love the vendor - give advice how to prolong the battery because customers put that on their doorstep, but when their advice breaks something, they get to claim innocence.... Ok, I better stop right there.

Anyway - yeah, Talk, no fooling.
 
...and another reason why manually stopping services and apps is a terrible idea.

If you are root or use titanium back-up that could be an issue too which I have a fix for
 
Huh. gTalk is nerver in my running processes list, nor is it set to auto-login. I still get gMail sync just fine. I'm running the stock Gmail app, though I am running Fresh 1.0 if that matters.
 
I use ATK, the stock gmail app, and am not rooted (yet) and have no issues. Maybe start over with your account/settings?
 
I've left GTalk alone for a day or so and now GMail on the EVO seems to be keeping up with other clients through the stock GMail app.

I had tried setting it up as an Exchange ActiveSync account with the HTC mail app, but the results seemed to be the same...didn't leave it that way very long though for comparison.

There are things I much prefer about the HTC mail app...font controls, pinch to zoom and such. If I setup GMail through this app as an Exchange account, would I still need to leave GTalk running??
 
Works fine for me, get emails through gmail email (not htc) as they arrive basically, also heard though that you need talk to be running, as I have caught it running in the background even when i never signed myself in, kinda strange that has to be working for email to be working but its fine,

no adverse effects for my phone ...

Anyone else notice Qik sometimes running in background? I have never even used it before ... :confused:
 
Sorry, that I don't know. I can understand a certain logic to using GTalk and GMail to work together - sorta. Only suggestion I can give is trial and error.

Oh yeah - as bundleware - it just jumps right up. Sprint knows you NEED Qik. :rolls eyes:

It may not hurt anything - but I rooted my phone and just deleted it. Hate it that much.

I would think it matters. One way or another, something needs to trigger GMail. In the stock rom, it's gTalk.

I haven't read anythign about Fresh changing the sync methods, though that's not saying it didn't. Of course, there's always the chance that Talk is actually starting but I seem to gloss over it whenever I'm looking at my running apps.

Now, I do think GMail might keep hanging around in the background, which would mean that it could grab incoming email. Though I'm not sure if the app takes pushes directly or not. I never looked into it. I do know I did the whole "disable auto login/logout and exit app" on stock, and never ran into sync issues.

The only other thing I can think of is that the phone maintains an open port to the servers to receive pushes. There was a thread over in the Android Lounge about push mail and how it was happening.

In any case, so long as it works, *shrug*. I only dig around the phone's processes when I notice a symptom of an issue, so maybe it's starting somewhere along the lines for me.
 
I think his issue wasn't simply sync per se, but that he wanted it in real time similar to his other systems' behaviors.

I don't contend that GMail needs gTalk to do that - I contend only that on the stock rom, that's what's required.

Any service that can follow the Google protocol is all that's required - last I checked, I think that's Jabber or Jabber-esque, so that's not terribly hard, and there may be other control message protocols that I'm not even aware of that could be used by Fresh.

Maybe your GMail client has it built in ... maybe it uses a simpler service ... maybe maybe maybe, I just wouldn't know that detail for sure.

I use another client that simply polls every hour and I'm happy with that, but everyone's needs vary.

You'd think that that would be all that's really required.
