Help GMAIL syncs only 1 way?

Please forgive me if this is PROPERLY answered somewhere and i'm not finding it.

I add contacts in gmail and it syncs to my phone no problem- the other way around is an issue.

I understand that to save a contact on my phone and have it update in my gmail account, i need to save it as a 'google contact' and not the default 'phone contact'.. however, i cannot figure out how to do that. i've tried everything i can possibly think of, checked every menu and every setting imaginable.

Someone please help!

go to contacts hit menu(soft key) tab more hit settings and select save new contacts to phone or google account
