Help Gmail, Thunderbird and IMAP

I have recently changed from a Gmail POP account to an IMAP account. I did this so I could use an app to backup my SMS to Gmail. However, Gmail doesn't push the messages to my phone nor does it show new messages up as unread in Thunderbird. I can't see anything in the Gmail account settings to change things.

Any help/suggestions appreciated.

Using latest edition of Thunderbird btw.

Hmm I guess it helps to tick the box in accounts for Gmail lol. Syncing okay now but mail still comes into Thunderbird as 'read' so if an email goes into a folder I don't know it is there until I open the folder which may be days after it has returned. With POP all mail arrived as unread. Why is IMAP different?
