Gmail, txt notifications no longer play, even though sound is on

Yeah, after awhile of me playing with my phone for the day it decides that it doesn't like to play notification sounds of any kind, even though all the settings have the volume on full. And while i'm here, why doesn't the home screen orientate sideways anymore like it did when it was out of the box? I have to slide out the keyboard to make it do that.

I have the same issue with orientation, only it's not consistent. The apps seem to switch fine, it's just the home screen, and sometimes it switches too. Weird. New user, so I may be missing something obvious.
