Help Gmail update

Is the new update only for 2.2? Appbrain is telling me I can't update due have 2.1 witch sucks.

Is the new update only for 2.2? Appbrain is telling me I can't update due have 2.1 witch sucks.

My understanding is that with 2.1 and earlier, Gmail was not a separate app from the OS. Any updates would have to be OTA. With 2.2 that changed, now gmail is a app on the market and easily upgradeable.
