The icon does not come up on the notification bar. Also i always have to go into settings and do sync manually, what gives?

What version of Android is on your phone right now?
Are you using a ROM?
To be honest, I find Gmail constantly notifying me of new email to be annoying and I'm glad it doesn't update notifications for me unless I manually update but hey whatever is your cup of tea.

Probably a stock defect, my moms phone had notification issues all the time with voicemail
