Root Going back to stock

Hi there I am looking to go back to a stock rom so I can apply the latest update on my phone I am currently on 2.36. Every time I try to go back using the RUU exe method I get the same error which is Error 171, and asks me to check my phone is connected to the computer, but it knows it is because it can tell me my current firmware version in the application before the process starts. If someone can give me a few pointers that would be fantastic!

You have connected the phone in HTC Sync mode though haven't you prior to running the RUU? You running Windows 7?

Couple of solutions:

1. when you get to the error, exit the RUU.
2. DON'T TOUCH THE PHONE, LEAVE IT AT THE "htc" SCREEN.
3. wait a few seconds.
4. start the RUU again.

I haven't personally used either and do not endorse the program suggested for the reg cleaning/fixing. You use any 3rd party software at your own risk!
