going to mexico

So I'm going to Mexico for new years and wanted to take my phone with me to use the wi-fi. Is there a way I can turn off the phone aspect of the device in order to not be charged for data and cell usage? I dont want to be getting text messages or have one of my apps access data behind the scenes and then getting jacked by verizon later.

wouldn't you need roaming active? by default that is off and I assume that means you won't get any cell usage if roaming isn't active and thus no charges.

if he cant figure out how to turn on wifi in airplane mode I'm sure he wouldn't have been able to figure that out on his own either

lol... im not that dumb. i just assumed that placing the phone on airplane mode would turn off the wifi and it did. after reading chippy's suggestion i tried once again and noticed that it turned it off but didnt disable it. so i turned it on again and wifi now works on airplane mode. Thanks for the info chippy

one last question. when activating airplane mode, it also shuts down gps. i tried checking and unchecking the Use Wireless Networks option but that didnt help.

any ideas?
