Do I only need a Goldcard if I have a branded Desire?

Yes, if you have an unrooted phone, which it will be if it is branded, you need a goldcard. If you're already rooted and you want to change your ROM you don't need it.

well, does that mean if I bought an unbranded, SIM free Desire, I also won't need a Goldcard to root?

you don't need a gold card to root if you use the Unrevoked3 tool, even if you have a branded phone, mine was Orange UK branded and i didn't need a gold card.
