bought a hero today. i had one about six months ago, rooted it, it was a dream. then i thought the grass was greener with another phone, it wasn't... so i went back. it's got .7 under the software version. i've tried every effin link on the internet, to include one's that specifically say .7 to do the ruu. no luck. somebody help me before i throw this phone through the window and get an i phone please...

So what are you wanting to do, root it or RUU it back to 2.1 ??

Are you saying you want to redo the Android 2.1 RUU or do you want to root your new Sprint HTC hero? I was a bit hazy on what you meant.

If you want redo the Android 2.1 RUU, you can flash it directly from HBOOT using this method here: [RUU] Official 2.31.651.7 in ZIP Format, Flashable from Fastboot - xda-developers . If you want to root it there are a few ways to accomplish that and here is a new one that works well: http://androidforums.com/sprint-her...awmod-hero-rooter-v1-3-updated-3-06-11-a.html .

correct me if i'm wrong but don't i need to do the latter to do the former?

No, should not have to. You can root your handset using the method in my previous post.

Give that method a try. It also automatically flashes ClockworkMod Recovery for you as well.

I think he is on Android 2.1 because he mentioned .7 in his original post. I figured that meant version 2.31.651.7. :)

I guess he will let us know. Haha. :D

sorry lbh i was actually replying to the don. but to you, i tried the hero rooter and it was a no go. couldn't get the damn thing to actually work. no clue... bout to make an attempt with the first link you posted.

You need to have .NET 4.0 installed. That could be the issue you are having with RegawMod.

If you use the Android 2.1 RUU link you will just be back to where you are now. I originally did not know what you were asking and that is why I posted that.

Try Z4Root, that will root it for you, follow this thread, Ok, Im ready to ROOT. How long is the process? (

If you go the route of Z4Root, the quick tutorial is to download it to your computer and copy it to your handset's microSD card. After that you will need a file explorer like EStrongs File Explorer to install the Z4Root .apk file.

Make sure you that can install from non Market sources. Then just run Z4Root and tap "Permanent Root" to start it. It might take a while to root it. If it takes more than ten or fifteen minutes, just pull the battery, reboot your handset, and run Z4Root again.

No, if it takes more than 5 minutes and seems stuck, simply hit the home button, and it should reboot by itself, if not then take the battery out

I have rooted six Android handset with this method and never had that work, but if it DOES sometimes then that is good to know. I also had three finish rooting after around twelve minutes.

I guess it is different for everyone. The Sprint HTC Hero handsets, especially, have a wide variety of reactions to various things.

Ya, welcome to the world of the Hero, they have a mind of there own, LOL

I rooted my hero with Z4root. I had the.7 at the end of my software version. Worked without a hitch. I had to pull the battery on mine as well after about 15 minutes, after reboot I was rooted.
Good luck and Happy flashing when you do get root! :D

ok ya i got pissed at it and took the easy route. i'm ashamed of myself for doing so but still, i did z4root

There is nothing to be ashamed of there at all. You did what you had to do to get your Sprint HTC Hero rooted.

Like DonB said, I would try out the AOSP Android 2.3 ROM: http://androidforums.com/sprint-her...-aosp-2-3-3-cm7-gingerbread-03-07-2011-a.html . It is very stable and works well. If any of us helped you out, feel free to hit the "Thanks" button under the helpful posts. ;)
