Good D3 window car mount?

Loving the Google streetview navigation, I would like to mount the phone to my car window. I know VZW has a $40 mount available, but before I order that one I wondered if anybody has really good or really bad experience with a car mount. Is there a cheaper one out there that does everything the $40 would do?

The oem mount was on sale for $30 when I orded my D3 on last thursday. I really like the OEM mount. it has a combo USB/3.5mm cord so that you can jack in power and audio. that way if you wanted to plug your D3 into the aux input of your car stereo you could and the audio would be coming through the micro usb. pretty cool.

I also like how the mount doesn't require you to have to plug in the power cord seperately to the device every time. it also has an insert that is removeable to let you use the car mount if you have a case on your D3.

Just get it.

Now THAT'S information I've been looking for.

I would suggest to go with the motorola car mount. I bought it for $48 @

Motorola 89496N Droid 3 Vehicle Dock with Rapid Vehicle Charger - Mount - Retail Packaging - Black

Good thing is its fulfilled by Amazon and i got it delivered in 2 days. Will post my review later.

Why the heck would you pay MORE for it than you can get it for directly from Verizon?

That's the one Verizon is selling, for less.

Exactly. And when I ordered my D3 last Thursday, it was on sale for $30 and since I was ordering my phone at the same time, it was all free shipping.

No problem. I'm really happy with the OEM Motorola Mount. I haven't tried the whole 3.5mm AND power cord, as my stereo in my car has BT and I just steam if I want music from my droid to my car stereo. But it's a really cool feature, especially since they pull both audio and power through the same micro usb connection to the Droid.

I'll still have to check if you can open the keyboard while it's in the dock. I'm thinking you s/b able to since the clasp at the top flips up to release the phone. I'd think that gravity would hold the phone in enough if you really, really needed the hard keyboard while in the dock for some reason. (not that I've had any need for that functionality).

But overall it seems well engineered and worth the $30 (on sale) that I paid for it.

can anyone post a link to where to get it on verizon's site? i am hunting for it and not finding it anywhere - thanks!

Thanks for the advice!! I decided to go ahead and buy the mount.

Here is the VZW link: Set Your Location

I bought the mount yesterday and drove home with it. When I put my phone in the mount, it jumps to car mode, where voice command reins. It's awesome. Everything fits and I think it would even fit with the extended battery, as there is a part you can remove to make room for a bigger phone.

I hooked it up to my radio so that it functions like a car kit. Speaker sound is good, I love it. Best buy. Much better than the shitty "almost a perfect fit" generic mounts.

I bought this from Verizon and at first I loved everything about it... but I am having a little problem with it. I docked my phone hooked up the USB cable to my charger, and the 3.5 mm output to my AUX input in my car. I started playing music and it came through my car stereo, as expected. Then I got a phone call and the music paused, but the ringtone came from my phones speaker, not the car audio. I answered the phone and it automatically switched to speakerphone, but it was coming directly from my phone's speaker and not my car stereo. Then when I hung up, the music resumed through my car's stereo. This isn't the biggest problem in the world, but I would prefer for phone calls to go through my car stereo as well... any suggestions/similar experiences?

Anyone using the OEM car mount notice that sometimes you have to reinsert the phone a couple of times before it switches to "car mode", and then pops up the display for NAV, Music, etc? I've also noticed that oftentimes, if I have the phone charging via the cig lighter, that when I turn the ignition off, then restart the car, that the phone is no longer being charged. I have to unplug the charger from the USB port and plug it back in. I'm new to Moto Droids and wonder if this is normal "functionality" or indicative of a problem with the phone and/or built-in micro USB port? Thanks!

Does anybody know all the commands that are available in the car mode? And if there's a shortcut for telling the droid where to navigate to?

I access the car mode commands using Activities in LauncherPro. I used LaunchPro Activities to add some of commands of the stock Motorola D3 vehicle dock to Car Dock Home v3 and they are working great.

I was thinking about getting the OEM car window mount for my D3 from VZW, but if I get a case, I'll have to remove it from the case every time I want to use the car window mount, which may get annoying. Any thoughts on that? I see 1 reviewer mentioning how it is a very tight fit w/ the case, but I plan to get a case w/ a holster, so that would definitely not fit.

Same problem here...when you have the audio jack connected directly the headphone jack, it works as it should but when connected the dock cable you then have to turn off speaker phone to get it to output through the usb cable. this should be a feature in the docking app as previously it was relying on whether or not something was plugged into the the headphone jack....again not a deal breaker but annoying....

on another note, I have the verizon belt clip/holster/case and it works with the dock, however the device now rattles in the dock where it did not before the case was on....I don't want to have to take the case off every time I drop it in the dock...has anyone else noticed the rattle with the case/dock combo?

I really like my car dock except for one thing:

When I get out of the car and leave the phone on the dock it discharges the battery in record time. Have gone from decent charge to fully discharged after a couple of hours of sitting in the dock in a parked car.

I've got an '03 CR-V with no fancy AUX/USB ports. I really want this for nav. but want to know what all is included. I'll be using a 3.5mm->tape for music and will use a 12v power outlet. I've got the tape but would like to know if this comes with the 12v outlet adapter? I don't think it does from what I've read, but could I just buy a cheapie from Amazon and use that? How does power go into the dock? Micro USB?

Thanks

I have the case/holster on mine and it fits into the car dock perfectly.

The dock comes with an insert that has to be added to make it hold a naked phone.

I thought so too.

After restarting it looks as if it is not charging, but after a few minutes the little lightning bolt shows back up. At least it does with mine.

Call me crazy, but why would you leave your phone docked in your car for hours?

Does it work with a 12v outlet though? Will I need to buy a separate 12v -> micro USB plug? Thanks for the info on the fitment of the dock.

It only goes to usb, (but also has an audio cable), so you do need a 12v charger with a usb input option.

I bought this one:

Kind of a pain that a proper charger is not included, but the dock is so great that it is tough to complain.
