good news, FYI

pardon a tangential question: If the 2.2 is tailored to the Fascinate then will we be able to load the same on the Captivate? VzW is beginning testing 2.2 soon. Not all Galaxy S phones seem alike in all details. So will model customization impeded us?

I ask because as a noob I tried to load active wallpapers from a friend's Fascinate naively and the install failed. ...Ideas here too appreciated..
 
Yea, I think we still have at least a month before we see it on the Captivate... but we can keep our fingers crossed :)

I am certainly hoping that this time Samsung gets it right and realy does deliver what they claim. The "GPS fix" (not optimization) is said to be in this, as well as other bug fixes and features.

So far the leaked JI6 is still the only version of Froyo in the wild. After using it for a few weeks I do like it alot, BUT the GPS is still spotty and worthless for Nav. No bluetooth voice command and no voice dial. Tethering and wifi AP work great, lets hope AT&T will leave them in. They took away the Android Keyboard and a few other things. The pin based lock screen is nice, the REAL battery indicator is good, flash 10.1 works great and the overall UI is smoother and more polished (then again, that my be in part to launcherPro and Cog).

So I do hope the final version will come soon and that it really will deliver what it promisses. Of course there is always Cog. (which is awesome) and I hear that CM is working on a version for the Captivate!

All versions are device specific and slightly different. The ROM for one will not propperly (if at all) work on another without modifications to the ROM.
 
The linked article mentions "North America". Is it referring to I9000 owners here or is it referring to the US carrier iterations (or both)? It's also interesting that there is no mention of bluetooth voice control or AP tethering. Also "fix" is actually used in conjunction with "gps"!? That's the official press release and Samsung actually said fix?
 
Don't mean to be rude, but I think everyone's missing the key point here. Regardless of what AT&T intends to do with its hamhanded approach to updates, this enables the guys over at cyanogen (and other ROM makers) to go nuts. I can't wait.

I think tethering is already in the vanilla Samsung Galaxy S (pre-Froyo).

The article mentions North America because we WILL eventually get it. I'm sure the final Froyo build for the NA flavors are going through carrier certification now.

I don't think AP tethering will make it into an AT&T release. I'm sure they would want to ax this feature since AT&T wants to charge separately for tethering. That being said, I'm running Cognition 2.2 which has AP tethering. I don't know if this was a feature in the leaked 2.2 firmware, or if the developer for Cognition did a custom port.

+1 I'm hoping we get Cyanogen so I can see what all the fuss is about. I've only been able to run designgear's Cognition 2.1/2.2 which I think is basically a bundle of popular mods/tweaks, but I'm curious to see what other custom stuff will get developed for the Captivate. Don't get me wrong though, Cog has treated me great...I don't think I'll plan to ever download an OTA firmware update :)

I completely agree. Those release notes are for the I9000 though. It should have AP tethering and bluetooth voice control. That's why I thought it was weird.

[Sigh]...[/Sigh]...given they tell us it has already been sent out, and that the leaked Froyo's GPS isn't much good from what I read (and tested myself), I hate to say I'm not optimistic. My general use with it on for a couple trips for about 1000 miles now, city and road, it seems the Antenna is poor. In general it can be used, but is finicky and frustrating (in Cognition 2.16 which is best I have experienced)

I'm hopeful, but doubtful, that the GPS on this phone will ever be what it should be.

I hope I am proven wrong.
