Good tablet for less than 300?

Fair enough, yeah, it seems like I'd just have to go with something thats Wifi only, since Im being told that having the unlimited data plan doesnt let me get unlimited tethering either. :(

I am not sure but last I checked to access app world, the RIM app store, requires a BlackBerry Internet Service account. Unless that got changed for QNX which runs on the Playbook. Still, 29,000 apps compared with Android's millions. With WiFi only my Curve was pretty much only good for haphazard web browsing

If you want to add unlimited tethering, you should be able to do it by logging into your verizon account online, click change features, and it should be listed under data hotspot feature and cost 29.99. I still have an unlimited data plan and just checked myself and it was there.

Gah, wish there was a more limited version, God knows I wouldnt be needing to go on every single day, assuming I get this. And since I have the unlimited data, I dont get the benefit of unlimited tethering. I dont understand that, if I'm using the internet for my tablet and not my phone, still the same thing. :(

i used to use a root wifi tether app when i was on Virgin, yea, it violated their TOS but they never penalized me for it, the only drawback was that any device connecting to my phone via the hotspot only got a lousy 9600 bps bandwidth, barely usable for web browsing, no good at all for video or game play, forget downloads. heck on 3G i'd have 1.2Mbps down but my laptop, PS3, etc only .9Kbps. never did get why. i only used it when my internet dropped for whatever reason as a backup if i just HAD to browse the web or check email

Well, for those tablet users, does having a Wi-fi only version hurt you, or what, especially if you can't tether it to your phone? Too bad there isnt a prepaid in the sense that you pay like 30 bucks for say 2 gigs total, and when the 2 gigs finally runs out, you buy more.

since i have wifi at home, at work, and at most places i visit, the issue of tethering is moot for me, and if i'm in the odd spot where all i have is cellular coverage, this is why i own a smartphone. my tablets are just extensions of my laptop, used where having the bulk is not convenient, and battery life is better. i use tablets where i'd normally use a laptop, and since i need wifi for my laptop to work, it makes no sense to want 3G there or some other method

I don't find having a WiFi only tablet to be a problem. Wifi is in a lot of public places, as well as my home and where I work. The few times that I absolutely needed to use it and didn't have WiFi I did tether. This has been a grand total of 6 times over 3 years. Getting a tablet with data radios and paying for a data plan wouldn't be worth the money considering how often it would have been useful.

Fair enough. It just sucks that I have unlimited data on my phone, and dont get to carry it over to say a tablet, but in that I'd have to pay a extra 30 bucks a month. Well, if thats so, than I guess I'm narrowing more to the Nexus 7, Galaxy Tab 2 7.7, or maybe Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, I'm really at a loss, including money.

welll then of those three i would definitely go for the nexus 7.

the tab 2's have been out for more then a year. they are slower.....one advantage is the micro sd card slot, but that is all i see.

The no SD card in the nexus could easily be combated by a USB otg cable ;)

I think tethering should be free automatically. It's like when you buy high speed internet they don't tell you "you can only use this for your PC, there's an extra charge to use it on other devices. " When you buy mobile internet, you should be free to use it on other mobile devices. But that's just me. I think the very existence of tablets with mobile data is a bit of a scam. As if these big mobile companies aren't gouging people enough every month. But hey, they're gonna do what they can get away with.

Its not a "bit" of a scam. It IS a scam. You're essentially paying to use the same connection twice and paying for the privilege of letting your phone forward its internet connection to another device. Its like the if your state DOT started making you pay 3 times the tax on your vehicle because its registered under 3 names.

The only reason limited users on Verizon have free tethering is because the FCC ordered them to. Otherwise they would gladly make you pay for 2 GB for your phone and 2 GB for everything else.

So us people lucky enough to have unlimited get screwed, sigh.
More or less. If your willing, you can always do it the unofficial way. Obviously, that's up to you, since it most likely means violating your TOS agreement. Not to say that once you tether, you lose your contract forever. I've been doing it for 3 years and never got caught. From what I can tell, its very rare to get caught, mainly because they don't have time to go through millions of user accounts to find any suspicious activity. But if you get caught, they can do whatever they please. For sure, it would mean losing unlimited.

I'd be happier with the prepaid plans IF you had longer than a month to use the paid for internet time. I mean, if I spent 80 for 5 gigs, it would be nice if I had 6 months+ to use that 5 gigs, based on random usage. But oh well.
