Good Wired Headset with Mic

Heads up everyone, the built quality kinda sucks on Moda Vibe II , the mic part of the headset came apart already, wow that took only an week. I don't know if it was only my headsets, that i got an bad one, but $119 headset and mic came apart in an week, that should tell you a lot.

I just got my V-Moda Vibe II headset today. I hope mine lasts more than a week

However, my problem with this headset is that the people I call cannot hear me very well. They say the volume is low. If I hold the mic closer to my mouth, the volume is louder. But that's not a viable solution. So I don't know what I'm going to do... any suggestions?

I also ordered a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter to try my Plantronics headset with the Droid. It arrived today too. But it doesn't work. The mic sound is not transmitted, so people I call do not hear me speaking. (Now I ordered yet another one to test, but I have to wait about a week for it to arrive.)

My Etymotic ETY•COM Headset should be here tomorrow. I'll report back on how I like it.

Do you use the shirt clip? I never experienced this problem, i usually get asked to talk low, cuz they hear me too loud. I don't use an shirt clip.

I think i given up on wired headsets after these ones, time to look into bluetooth headsets now. Keep us updated on how the Etymotic turns out.

Update on Exchange: The seller told me, he will send out another set.

I got mine from the same seller. I called V-Moda and they knew the seller. So that made me feel better. He is at least buying some product directly from them. When buying from this seller, the warranty is not through V-Moda. But the seller does give a warranty, as djsat03 said. So I think the seller is OK. (Probably not selling counterfeit product. Mine certainly looked genuine.)

yes, I was using the shirt clip. I wonder how I can get mine to be loud (mic) like you describe...

BTW, I cannot give up on wired headsets because I refuse to have bluetooth radio equipment right next to my brain! No way!

I do not know if this will make an differences, do you have this setting on : voice privacy? My is off.

i have the v-moda vibe duo (the original ones) and they work great.

Does your voice come across loud?

I just tested a few setups by calling in and leaving a message on my own voice mail. Then I played them back. My voice volume was much lower when I used the V-Moda Vibe II compared to just speaking into the phone. I can understand why people said it was hard to hear me.

Would it be possible to use a headset without a mic for phone calls? -- just speak into the phone's mic and listen in the headphones?

Seems like a strange idea, but would it work? Is the phone's mic active if listen-only headphones are plugged in?

Yep... that works... standard music headphones using the phones internal mic...

Thanks. On your advice, I just tried it with some old SanDisk ear buds -- it does work. Surprisingly, it was the best result on a phone call of any headset I have tried yet. That's pretty sad.

I will be able to test the Etymotic ETY

I will be able to test the Etymotic ETY•COM Headset tomorrow and that should give me another good comparison.

At the moment, I'm only concerned with phone call quality. I'm testing mostly VoIP (with Sipdroid), but some cellular calls too. For music listening, I wouldn't use the Etymotic, obviously (it uses only one ear piece).

Making phone calls with the V-Moda Vibe II is a bit weird because they ear buds fit so well in my ears that they block out most external sound -- they even block out my own voice, so talking sounds very weird. :D

Like i said before do not drive with both of them in both ears, because will not hear that much background noise at all. I almost forgot ones, and i thought my car wind noises has gotten better or something. lol

How you like the Moda for music so far?

I have the Etymotic ETY-COM and the hf2. The sound quality is very good but you'll need to replace the small filters and, at least with my hf2, the glider eartip twice a year. I keep mine in my pocket or around my neck so that may cause more wear. Will the ETY-COM work with the droid? The 3.5mm plug has three segments, not four. Might what to check so as not to damage the phone.

The ETY-COM mic tends to move away from my mouth when I'm walking as there is no ear clip to hold it in place. As I recall (haven't used it in a while) the wind kills it. They have two sponge pieces that go over the mic but walking around with that is kind of awkward.

I use the hf2 because I like to listen to podcasts while commuting. They work well on noisy NYC streets even on pretty windy days. I usually hold the mic by my mouth otherwise as I'm walking the person will tell me my voice gets louder and softer as the mic bounces.

Yes, they are great for music. I was in the car listening to Tan Dun's Desert Capriccio today. This is not something you could usually listen to in the car because of the dynamic range of the music. But with the V-Moda Vibe II, it was a great listening experience. I was very pleased.

However, when I got out and started walking, I noticed that the cord transmits noise into the earphones as it brushes against your shirt. So great for driving, but not great for walking and listening to music (in my experience). One of the reviews you posted earlier mentioned the same issue with cord noise.

I would be extremely pleased with these if the mic volume was louder on phone calls for me. (Most of my calls are VoIP on the Droid.)

Does anybody know any good wired headset with mic?

I had the Motorola EH25 Stereo Earset (around $25). And i liked it before it broke in 2 months. And i want to get an new one. But i want something that will last me longer then that. Even though i didn't lose any money on those because i bought it from overstock with warranty and they ended gaving me the full refund with the price of product and the warranty price back . I am not big fan of blue tooth headsets because first you have to turn on the bluetooth on your phone and then pair it and also then u have to charge your bluetooth end of the day. In the end its too much of an hassle. Besides the quality of the sound through wired headsets are much better then the bluetooth from what i have experienced.

Any advice for good wired headsets(w mic). I will be using it for mostly phone calls and not that much music.

Well, if you want the Best thats comfortable as well, than head on over to Bose and checkout the "Bose Mobile In Ear"

I got my Etymotic ETY-COM today. Unfortunately, I didn't get the right adapter, so I can't try it with my Droid yet. But I did try it with my cordless home phone. I can't seem to find an eartip that will work for me. I'm really not very optimistic that this headset is going to work well for me. It is just too difficult to put on (and that's assuming that I could find an eartip that would fit).

(In regard to low mic volume, I'm beginning to think that's a problem with Sipdroid with headsets. It is not a problem with Sipdroid when using the phone's mic. Maybe I'll post separately about that.)

I'm returning my second set of wired earbuds, these being the Scoche high-end set that I found on Apple's accessory page:

iPod & iPhone Accessories Earphones Increased Dynamic Range earphones with tapLINE control technology

They sound great, but the track forward/backward function doesn't work and I need that. If I'm on a crowded subway train and want to skip a few songs in a playlist, fumbling with the lockscreen pattern with a backpack on my back and a newspaper in one hand is a recipe for dropped Droid :(.

I've read/searched all the threads on headsets here (and I'm pretty sure the answer is no) but I just want to verify. Is there a set of wired headphones (ear bud style preferred) that has a builtin controller that will allow all of the below functions on a Droid?

  1. Integrated mic
  2. Call pickup when music playing
  3. Call end
  4. Track forward
  5. Track backward
  6. Pause of music track
Thanks

I would add volume control..

That's quite a list, but hey... why not?

Hello,

Since I read this thread last week, I've been trying to research headsets too.

For those with the v-moda headsets, please be honest, was your headset good and did it last? I'm asking because I have found so many complaints about that brand breaking in a week, month, 4 months, year. I only found a couple people reply that theirs has lasted a year or 15months so far, but it was rare to find.

djsat03: how long is the warranty from the person on Ebay? I see he replaced yours, which didn't last long at all.

I'm tempted to get the Vibe-Duo, but not sure.

I found some positive reviews of iFrogz Timbre with mic, but haven't read one from someone using an HTC droid eris.

I found many positive reviews about Ultimate Ears Superfi 4vi.

A few people were pushing people to some Nuforce NE-7M? They have a funny color, but you could probably paint them.

My head hurts trying to research it without seeing them in person.

I'm trying to stay in the <= $50.00 range

Rick

I like mine a lot but I have only had them about a week.

It is a 60 day warranty. And it is from the seller, not v-moda.

Thanks for all the links. I kept my v-moda vibe II, but I returned the Ety-Com headset.

I did find an adapter that lets me use regular telephone headsets such as Plantronics with the Droid, and it works well. But I had to buy about 5 adapters before I found one that worked. All the adapters had the same specs and they actually look identical. But they are different inside.

Between the v-moda vibe II and my two Plantronics headsets, I'm in good shape now. But I may buy one more headset just to see if there is anything better than the v-moda and equally portable. (At home the Plantronics are perfect.)

My main problem now is that Sipdroid has some sound bugs that show up only when using a headset. :(

Update: The seller seems to stand behind his policy for exchanges.
I got the headsets last week, and he shipped it the next day when i notified him it broke.

I am not worried about after 60 days if it breaks down either, i got an square trade warranty, which covers up to 3 years. (it cost me $14.99 for 3 years with accidental damage coverage). They will refund the full retail price of the headsets if they can not fix it( which usually happens with headsets).

I have been using v-moda headphones since they started and have only bought directly from their website. 1st pair I bought was the REMIX-M Class got lost by UPS ,but I actually talked to the CEO his name is Val its a small company in Hollywood, CA. He sent out another pair and got it was very quick the cord started to rip after about a year in a half the warranty was passed. Called and they replaced right away.

Then i got some for my sister same kind, hers broke in the same place after a year they had stopped selling that model and let me upgrade them at no extra cost, which were the VIBE w/o mic have had these for a long time now and strong as can be. I myself is thinking about getting the vibe duo w/mic so i can use with my moto droid, they are also coming out with another model soon that looks pretty solid so i might wait till they are available.

That seems like a smart solution. With the amount you saved on the purchase cost, you are still way ahead after paying for the warranty.
