Goodbye OG Droid

So this may seem like a post more suitable for the OG Droid thread, but I disagree. The SGN, IMHO, seems to be the next phone that will truly change the smartphone landscape in many ways similar to the way the OG Droid did. So I thought I'd post a couple things here:
A. a quick, Hallmark Movie-eque story of how an Apple employee told me about the droid; and
B. the shinannigans my droid is pulling now, as we count down the last few days (hopefully) until the SGN's release

A. around Sept of 2009, I had an LG Voyager...billed as Verizon's iPhone killer, it certainly was not. Like so many "iPhone killers," it was a joke. A decent phone in and of itself, but the moniker of, "iPhone killer" on an LG Voyager is laughable. I had become sick and tired of being on the best network with the WORST cellphones. I looked briefly into getting that PoS Blackberry Storm 2 for a bit, but realized it, too, was hastily put together in terms of hardware and software. Fed up, and after a great deal of consideration, I walked into the Apple store and told them I wanted out of my Verizon contract (for which I would pay a heft fee) early and get an iPhone. The guy says to me, "Before you waste a lot of money exiting your contract, have you heard of the Droid?" Before I could offer the obligatory Star Wars response, he said, "It's a phone being released on Verizon by Google and Motorola, and it's the first phone that is truly going to marginalize the iPhone. I told him I hadn't heard of it and he directed me to droiddoes.com. Long story short, I did, and I had my droid I think the day it was released in early Nov. For one of the few times in my life, I felt like I had a product that was truly at the top of the heap and ahead of the curve. And then when my extremely tech savvy friend told me about rooting, and after I saw what rooting could do with my phone, well...the rest was history, as I'm sure most of you can understand. I remember showing my coworkers my phone when I first got it. One of them went out and bought a droid on the spot. A second had one a few days later. The OG Droid should rightfully go down as one of the greatest cellphones of all time.
B. Now that I'm awaiting the release of the SGN, clicking on phandroid.com and droid-life with alarming repetitiveness, my droid in the last 2 or 3 weeks has almost decided to say, "f--k this s--t" and all but throw in the towel. Here's what it's doing. I'd be curious what everyone else's phone is doing (btw, I'm running 2.2.1 and BBv0.5 with a theme from Fabolos):
- my phone has been telling me there's an update available with popups about every 15 minutes. I know I can go in and install a new file somewhere that will trick the network into thinking I have the latest updates, but I've been putting it off thinking (foolishly) that the SGN will be released "shortly"
- android market no longer works
-- I realize these previous two could be fixed by flashing a new ROM, but I don't feel like it...don't want to go through the hassle of setting everything up again just to go out and get a new phone. I have zero time anyway to do that sort of thing
- battery life has gone south to the point where I need to charge it at work or I won't make it through the day

That's it! Just had to post. Curious if anyone else is going to have fond memories of their phone (esp if it's an OG Droid) upon turning it in for the SGN.

I too have a history with my OG that is being replaced by the SGN:

I got into smartphones back when motorola had the original Q. I bought it used and loved it, but wanted something better then winmo 5. So i upgraded to a Motorola Q9C, used that for quite some time, but the BB like appearance wasnt doing it for me. I got trapped by the allure of the Samsung Omnia. A Fantastic camera, a shoddy phone. GPS never worked, the screen was resistive and winmo was a better BB style OS w/no touch screen. I met my GF around that time (wifey now :) ) and she had a sidekick on Tmo. We talked all the time, and her service was crappy. So i wanted to upgrade. I wanted the Nexus One soooo badly, but didnt like Tmo. Verizon gave me a early upgrade and I got myself and my wife our droids on Jan 7th 2010. (i really got my wife an eris, but returned it and got her OG for free on amazon after). I loved my phone.... My wife, not so much. Coming from the sidekick i thought she would like the slider, but I enjoyed it more. I got another 1 year upgrade from verizon and got her a Incredible in Jan 2011. I replaced my OG with hers (Mine had a crack across the middle of the screen and across the LED). Again I Loved it. I bought a Nook Color in March and loved the tablet, and suddenly the OG screen was too small. I wanted a Tbolt. I upgraded (if youll call it that) in June and loved it for a while, but soon sense made no sense (lol) and CM7 had data issues. I sold it over a month ago and went back to the OG. It ran strong for a bit, but I couldnt do much on it. I FC'd apps while loading them because it took so long, and it was dying. So I took her out of service last week, I put her to bed in her dock and now she wakes me up every morning :). My wife upgraded to a Droid DAZR ($.01 on amazon for getting a new line and fooling amazonwireless lol) and I took her Inc. Within 10 minutes Sense was gone, replaced by Miui and CM7.

I stand here waiting for the SGN. Im waiting for the device that I will keep for almost 2 years. Im waiting for the device that will handle AOSP w/o data issues... Im waiting for the device with the HD screen, 1gb ram and dual core OMAP goodness (i didnt like my snapdragon in the tbolt). Im waiting for the 'Developers Device' to come to the VZW network.. I almost cant wait, and my wife hates me about it, but whatever lol..

Wow, pretty much the exact same story as me. I started out with the Voyager too. I definitely agree it was absolutely no competition to the iPhone, lol. I don't see how they could even conceive of comparing it to the iPhone. But it was still a great phone for what it was. I used it for navigation and even "hacked" it to tether over DUN, lol. It was definitely the best feature phone on the market at the time. The keyboard on that thing is huge and still the best I've ever felt.

I'm pretty much in the same boat with my OG Droid too; having to keep it on charge at work to make it through the day, even using the other batteries I have for it. I returned to stock ROM because all 2.3+ ROMs run like complete garbage on my Droid, regardless of what memory tweaks I used and what clock speed my CPU ran at (usually at 1.1 GHz). It's usually pretty snappy and stable now on the stock 2.2.2 ROM, but memory (both storage and RAM) constraints are still an issue. I have to constantly clear caches to keep available memory above 40 MBs and if I use the browser or navigate, I basically can't keep anything running the the background, including the launcher so when I go to switch apps, it re-draws and is slow as hell.

I can't wait to retire it for the G-Nex. It's going to be a night/day difference. But the Droid will always be remembered as a great phone for me despite a lot of its shortcomings.

Funny, I'm following the same path (Voyager->Droid->SGN). I had forgotten some of those feelings and experiences from those phones in the last 4 years.

My Droid's been laggier than ever, especially with the camera & gallery, and that recent nagging update pushed me to finally flash to a clean ROM & SD card in this last (hopefully) week of waiting to keep my sanity. It's served us well, but I won't feel too bad moving on. ;)

My experience is the same as most of yours. Voyager to Droid to SGN. This phone can't come out soon enough, though. My OG keeps freezing, not loading apps, etc. Battery pulls happen more often than phone calls for me now...

I first got on Verizon 3 years ago (as in, not counting the time I was on my parents for a long time before going T-Crap for a while [sorry, terrible experience for us]. I got the ENV2, my wife got the Voyager.

I got the Droid June 2010 with my wife's early upgrade as the main account holder, since I was on my 4th replacement (piece-o-kwap). I really want the Gnex, or another vanilla Android phone, unless they are all old and slow by then, then maybe an HTC. I haven't spent the time to learn to root and rom, so I'm just all stock. It works ok, but kinda slow and laggy. It will give me a black screen with the home icon showing if I touch the app tray and it's not ready to decide to actually open up completely. It does what I need, but not all I WANT. Can't wait for my next powerhouse in April when it's upgrade time.....probably all quad core by then.

Didn't we already have this thread a few weeks ago? Haha. Damn Verizon...

Battery: A year into using my OG droid (bought on release) I bought 2 new batteries at about 3 bucks each on amazon, as well as a standalone charger. I use a battery til it's low and swap it out. Easily lasting 24 hours+ with moderate use today, and has been very stable and smooth besides slow home screen draws, using Verizon updates.

In 2009 I graduated and was still on a family plan with my mom on Sprint. She wanted to get rid of the plan because it was no longer a good price, as my brother had left the plan in the middle of the year for the Iphone. I knew about android and was eager for a good phone for it. I followed news and knew about the HTC Hero which was only out in Europe for several months and was typically considered the first decent android phone. I waited and waited, and finally it came to Sprint in October. Sprint at the time allowed you to return the phone and cancel the contract within 30 days, and at the time I was actually looking forward to the Samsung Moment. I got off my family plan and tried it out, and suddenly started hearing about the Droid. I also found out my company had an 8% discount with Verizon. Then the Moment flopped, so I got the Droid and a Verizon plan on launch day.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I did get a free warranty replacement for my phone back in April '10 after running a 10K in the rain while listening to music with it then getting no signals and a blue screen error when i turned it back on.

Now sadly I am having horrible touch screen failures. It had happened earlier this year when I used it while in humidity and sweating, but was mainly just some sporadic response on the right side of the screen that would go away after the phone seemed to dry out. Now in the past few weeks, starting when I drove up to Oregon for Thanksgiving where it was really humid, after having a big drop of water hit the screen when leaving a restaurant, and after sleeping with the phone and maybe applying pressure, (no idea what the cause is) the whole column of the screen, about a quarter of it, above the home button has lost functionality besides being able to draw horizontal lines from one side to the other. Since that time the functionality has come back, has been just the right quarter above the search button, has been the entire right half of the screen, and has settled on the original column above the home button. I have tried my best to clean it up, used rubbing alcohol, let it dry out, put a fan on it, but nothing much has been successful. I have adjusted to using it (having to rotate to hit certain icons, thank god for the keyboard) but have been really itching to get the nexus and very frustrated about the lack of an announcement.

I wish I still had my OG Droid so I could properly say goodbye. The Galaxy Nexus is the first phone I've been as excited about as the original Droid... well, unless you include the Bionic, which I gave up on after all of the delays and talk of completely changing the device.

I was out there before the store opened on the day of release to get that puppy. Unfortunately, my lovely little Droid (Rest in peace) died shortly before the summer and I ended up getting a Thunderbolt to replace it with so I would assure I'd be grandfathered into unlimited 4G. I hate this damn Thunderbolt with a wild passion.

I'll join you in saying goodbye to Verizon's first trusty Droid device.
