Google apps not connecting in data mode

I have a peculiar connectivity problem with my new Sony Ericsson Xperia ST15i. It's an older phone, although never used. Before this one I had another just like it with Android 2.x on it, but it broke down.

The SIM card I am using came from the old phone. Obviously, I activated the new phone with Metro PCS, but nothing in my plan has changed.

The old phone did not have a problem I'm about to describe.

Xperia ST15i
Android 4.0.4
Metro PCS

When I use WiFi connection all my apps are able to connect to the Internet.

When WiFi is not available and the phone switches to the data mode, it appears that most Google based apps are not able to connect, although all other apps I downloaded can connect fine.

Fail to connect in data mode:

Google Maps (7.x, tried rolling back to 6.x and no luck)
YouTube
Google voice search
Gmail
Play Store
Google+ (Locations maps don't download, but everything else connects)

Random sampling of apps that do connect in data mode:

Email client that comes with 4.0.4
Browser that comes with 4.0.4
Facebook
Tunein
CSipSimple (VOIP client)
Waze

I searched Google far and wide for a hint on what may be causing this but no luck. Thanks!

Verify your settings under Wireless and Network/More settings/Mobile Networks.

Be sure Mobile data is enabled.
Be sure your network mode is set properly or "auto".

Metro PCS is a re-seller of of major providers depending on the model and radio of your phone, you may need to enable "Data roaming" even if you are not actually roaming as M-PCS may have latched onto a carrier your phone thinks it roaming on.
