Root Google "captcha" sign in

Curious incident which I have never had happen before.

Had an exclamation on the notification bar which prompted me to enter a captcha-type entry. Should've taken a screenshot. Anyway, after entering I started to get a little nervous about why the hell this happened as I've never seen it before and whether this was an attempt of some sort to compromise my gmail account or password (which is quite strong, by the way).

I googled and came up with this thread. <---describes pretty much exactly what I had.

Haven't installed any new apps in at least 2 weeks or so. Few updates on apps here and there but nothing that seemed extraordinary.

Any suggestions or has anyone else seen this before (other than the linked thread). Think I should change my google password?

Running rooted with Elite 5.02.

Maybe with the pwn2own hackathon going on I've just breached the entire network!!

I have had this issue come up a few times, mostly when I am in someplace where my signal is fading in and out.

I changed my password, but it still comes up every now and again. I uninstalled any of the "new" apps that I had installed, but I still had the issue afterwards.

I am rooted, but running the stock ROM, but I had this issue before than. I am also using the D2 extended battery.

I should also mention that I have had this issue since roughly October of last year, off and on.

I have exactly the same problem. It does seem to be related to when the smartphone (desire HD in my case) has been in a poor signal area. Once this happens the catcha sign-in is required to allow emails to be received/sent. This is really annoying - so much so that I may have to abandon gmail and use an alternative ISP address. Once this does happen, gmail is locked on both the smartphone and also any other computer. I do have other email addresses and the issue does not arise with any of them. Is there an answer? Why does gmail persist with this nonsense?

I wish I could give more of an answer. All I know is that, except for that one time, it hasn't happened since.
