Google changing Nexus program?

If anything I think this will lead to less fragmentation. All phones are coming from Google and all of them will have 5.0 vanilla android. So all Google has to do is release the update. No manufactures or carriers to go through.

This is awesome and exciting news.
+1 I agree and I can't wait for this to happen. The Canadian carriers are not known for their fast updates. I think this would be ideal if OEM release a new phone, they release one with their Skin and another one just Vanilla that's sold through the Google Store. This is utopia for us Android lovers!

As long as the chip sets are the same I'm fine but with multiple OEM I can't see that happening. As long as the phones are supported BY GOOGLE I'm fine. I have used all the nexus devices and I will keep on doing so. I just hope the idea of the nexus stays the same
This is already the case with the Galaxy Nexus. The Verizon Galaxy Nexus uses the TI OMAP 4460 processor while the GSM Galaxy Nexus uses the Exynos processor. I don't really see an issue with different chips being used.

I just read this story in today's Wall Street Journal and immediately grasped the import of the news. Now, how will this impact the ROM/modding community? Are we likely to see less mods since more Android phones will be "vanilla" right out of the box?
Actually, I don't think this is much of an issue. All Nexus phones have bootloader that is quite easily unlock. These phones are very developers friendly. Most Nexus owners are into the hacking and roming of their phones. Those that don't root but want to experience vanilla Android OS might migrate from a skinned Android phone. This will most likely not diminish the rooting community for the Nexus phones. It will segregate the Nexus rooting community a bit. As now everyone owning a Galaxy Nexus might get either a Nexus X, Nexus Y or Nexus Z next year.

Since I'll be upgrading in summer of 2013 I will probably be buying one of these new Nexus 5.0 devices. Very exciting!

Actually they both use the TI OMAP. And the difference between the Verizon GNex is huge aren't they just getting 4.0.4.

Still haven't gotten it, not officially anyways. :p Yet another reason that Verizon is most likely not going to get another Nexus, from the comments from Google engineers about the length of time to get an update approved, to VZW blocking Google Wallet, Google is probably done ever working with VZW directly, at least till VZW is off CDMA, and fully LTE.

From what I read you can't build cdma from the normal GSM source. It just seems like a hassle to build to a technology only a few carriers use.

If I had to guess, phones by HTC, Moto, and Samsung, and tablets by Asus and Samsung. Maybe a surprise from LG or Pantech phone wise, and Acer or Toshiba tablet wise.

So long as you can purchase the phones in Australia coz at the moment you can't buy the Galaxy Nexus through their store if you live in Australia.

I just saw an article that V is bringing out a phone that can take a European SIM for those that travel - so if this is true, why can't the phones be dual? Whatever network would deal with activation.

I'm definitely looking forward to the next Nexus. I was debating on getting the Galaxy Nexus but I probably will skip it. I heard alot of positives and a lot of negatives as well. Going with the new EVO and will start saving for the new Nexus coming this fall. I love that they will have multiple devices to choose from. I'm betting on Samsung or HTC.

If the Play store sells to Canada at the same time as it sells to the US, then I'm in :) And the phone has to be penta-band!
