Google contacts

I was just going through my contacts today and noticed that some but not all of my google contacts had duplicates. It was a hassle to go through them and delete them. Does anyone know why this happens? Or is there a easy way to delete them if it happens again? Also is there an easy way to delete all contacts saved on the phone?

If you log into your gmail account and go to contacts/my contacts, it has an option for you to erase duplicate numbers.
