Google Docs app released for Android

Haven't had much time to test it yet but it seems pretty good overall, though some seem to be complaining that it's just a window frame around the mobile site.

Surprised this isn't bigger news though, seems like A & Me was the only blog to pick up on this. Been out since about ~11am today as far as I can tell.

It's be something people have been asking for since, well since the release of Android, but it's better late than never I guess eh? :)

anyone else have a problem using it with an Excel 2007 file? i get an error when i try to download an .xlsx file.

can someone please test and report back?

thanks.

i get a "file not found" java error every time i try to open an Excel 2007 .xlsx file with the Google Docs Mobile App. docx Word 2007 files open fine. so do other file types. and Excel 2007 .xlsx files open fine on my PC browser via Google Docs.

can someone please test this?

If that's the case, I'll just stick with my bookmark.

Parts of it sort-of are, but I think it's an overall slick app. I'm not sure that the reuse of some of the mobile site detracts from the overall experience. Though I have yet to test it too extensively.

I would imagine it will only get better from here too.

Some of my documents are not editable on app. The "Edit" button just doesn't appear when I open the app. Anyone else notice this? Solutions? Is it some document attribute I don't know about?

For me old docs were not editable. I assume that's a bug as newly created docs were editable just fine.

Also, I'm not 100% sure -- but I think some of the docs that weren't editable for me were created in a different app, so that could be a cause too.

Eh... Nothing special, to be honest.
I am still going to chose DocsToGo over this app (probably because I paid for DocsToGo?) - for now.
The only interesting feature, is the converting a picture into a word document. It works pretty well, but not great. I have been able to snap a photo of a passage in a book, and it transcribed it - I just don't see much use in this feature.

EDIT: What I would REALLY love, is for Evernote to have that ability. The ability to transcribe text in a photo, into a word document. I would seriously pay, to have that feature\ability built into Evernote.

I thought evernote had some type of OCR?

OCR is always kinda rough though - 'bout as accuracte as voice recognigtion.

So like kettle shoelace home is asparagus happy dolphin us time.

Does it? Maybe I should have checked before posting... Guess I'll poke around the app, now.

Yep, Evernote will let you search text within image files. It doesn't create separate text like Google Doc does (I think).

Oh, that's what I was wanting - it to create separate text.
I will test it out, and see what happens (just upgraded to a premium membership, and one of the features was something like "higher priority in our image recognition" - so I'm guessing it takes some time, so there's still a chance that my recent image-uploads could be converted to text).

EDIT (5:36pm): Yup, just tested it - it does just allow you to search for text within photos. A cool feature, but not what I was wanting :s

All your images (regardless of when they were uploaded) are searchable. Take a picture of a page of a book, for example, and upload it to Evernote. Then you should be able to search for text that was on the page.

If you upgraded to a premium membership, you can do the same thing with PDF files, search for text within them.
