Google Hangouts

Hi, any help here would be appreciated. My wife and I both have Nexus 4's and we use the same google account (we set it up for our wedding RSVP and it just seemed to make sense to keep it) for our separate phones. My wife has now bought her parents (who live in France) a Moto G each, so essentially a very similar phone, with one of the main reasons being that they can now 'text' each other for free. There are obviously the options of Whatsapp, Viber etc.. but it seemed to make sense to use Hangouts as it's already there on the phone and, i imagine, integrates nicely with everything else. But it only seems to recognise Google username as opposed to the phone number, is there a way of changing this?

sorry, this is just a very long and convoluted way of me trying to ask, if my mother in law wants to send a message to my wife through Hangouts, can that be done whereby it goes only to her and not to me also (since our phones are in the same google account)?

Thanks. sorry if this seems a stupid question

Hi t147,

I've moved your post to the subforum where Android Applications are discussed.

On to your question though: Hangouts does have the ability to function as a standard text messaging platform to send and receive messages based upon a contact's phone number, but that only functions over the carrier's SMS network - you may be charged for those messages since they would be SMS instead of data.

As an alternative, i think(?) the Whatsapp app works by using the phone number instead of the google account

Absolutely correct Funky. There is an annual charge of 69p after the first 12 months.

If only one of you are using Hangouts the other can log out via the app's settings. Touch your Gmail account & then select log out. If you have a jellybean phone you can also disable the app via the main phone settings & applications.

I'm right "next door" to your in-laws here in Spain, and am ALWAYS messaging to the States or other parts of Europe, and have tried Hangouts and to be quite Frank, it's not that hot in my opinion. I use Viber, which recognizes phone numbers and is faster than Hangouts and I like the way it looks better too. It only takes a few minutes to download and install, so even though you already have hangouts I'd really recommend you give Viber a shot!

I tried Viber for a while but it prevented my phone from sleeping which drained my battery in no time. Whatsapp & Hangouts don't seem to have that problem.
