I am thinking about getting my teen an Android (verizon) so we can keep track of his where abouts, without always having to text him and ask where he is. I think this is also a great safety feature. I am confused by the "Supported Phones"

Google Latitude is available on the following mobile devices:

  • Android-powered devices with Maps version 3.0+
  • iOS devices (iPhone 3G, 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, and 3rd/4th generation iPod touch)

So what phones have Maps version 3.0?

Old ones. :)

The latest version of Maps (5.7.0) is available for installation/update from the Android Market and runs happily on a two year-old HTC Hero. IOW, whatever handset you get will likely have a much more up-to-date version installed so Latitude compatibilty is assured.

Others' experience may vary, but I've noticed that Latitude doesn't seem to automatically update with my location without me using Google Maps regularly. This has been the case with my current phone (Atrix and my last - Nexus One)
