Google Maps 5.0 is here

The new version of Google Maps is here. Supporting 3D views of buildings in large cities, map rotating and compass rotating. Also supports map tilting, but seems to not work on the SGS. New maps also supports caching which should be a welcome change for travellers and people with pay for data plans.

Since the new update, I've discovered that Google Maps always runs in the background without the option of quitting. I understand Android is designed to allow for applications to remain idle without the need to end/kill the process but personally, I like as much available RAM freed up as possible especially when web browsing.

Anyone else?

It worked well on my phone. Dragged the 2 fingers down at the same time and the map tilted.

Can you download the maps to your phone for selected areas as to avoid roaming charges when on the move?

Yes browsing map tiles and caching them for offline use is supported!!

Settings>Applications>Running Services

Check there.

Also don't forget to use the Task Manager to clear your RAM.

Jeez, I think I have tried everything - how do I tilt?

1. Does it work everywhere in the world (in the map)
2. Do you have to be in a special compass mode?

Put your 2 fingers on the screen and drag both of them below to tilt the map and then again up to tilt back.

It seemed to work for me without the special compass mode and I guess it should work everywhere in the world.

hey guys,
How did you upgrade google maps ? I see no menu for this :S

I know, I have even seen it done on a Youtube movie but it doesn't work. My only theory is that during installation the app did not detect my phone version properly and disabled the function. Tried reinstalling to no avail.

I did this. Nothing appears :S just other map programs :S I also searched only for google and "google maps 5.0" but nothing :S
