Google Maps 5.0 now available

Something I've noticed since the update is that on checking battery usage maps seem to always have quite a high %. Even over night when def not opened maps, still there. I've turned latitude off but this doesn't seem to make a difference. Anyone else?

I've not noticed it having a high % with battery but what I have noticed with system info is that it seems to *KEEP* turning back on running in background....yet I keep killing it via force closing...yet give it lil while an its back on..

That may be bacause Maps is working in the background to check your location and cache map sections of areas that you visit.

According to androidandme:

Recently changed in this version:

Tilting: Drag down with two fingers to tilt the map. Tilt while zoomed in on one of the 100+ cities around the world with 3D buildings to see a skyline spring to life.

Rotating: Twist with two fingers to rotate the map. After tilting to see 3D buildings, rotate around them to gain a new perspective from any direction.

Smooth zooming: Slide two fingers together or apart, and see the map and labels continuously scale to any zoom level, stopping when your fingers stop.

Compass mode: Center the map on your location, and then tap the compass button in the top right corner. The map will flip into 3D mode and start rotating to match your perspective, while still keeping all the labels upright and readable.

The HTC Desire supports panning, zooming, and tilting gestures only.

This may not be new to everyone (only just discovered this myself today) but certainly on my Desire two finger rotate using Google Maps does work. I guess a firmware update and or Maps update has enabled this function.

yea, as Gmaps is now on v5.7 or whatever now...its gone through some nice streamline updates since december..

one of them being that it now downloads maps to your phone within I believe its a 10 mile radius to your position...not OVI Maps style great on Nokias...but its getting there..
