Google maps 5 is here!!

Just downloaded it and so far I love it! Very fast with the new vector based rendering. The 2 finger tilt gesture works, and the new compass mode too (tap the locate icon twice), but the 2 finger rotate is not working for me.

it's nice...live in houston and zoomed in on minute maid park, downtown buildings, 3d works amazing.

The 3D part of it wasnt working for me, I had to uninstall all updates and re-install for it to work, but it works now. I love Google!

Everything works perfectly expect the rotation. The Inc. is a supported device for all the new features of the map update. I don't understand why it does not work. I hope it's not because I'm running CM6

Everything works great here including rotation. Running rooted Nov update/stock rom.

Run sat overlay because install satellite and the terrain references help a lot when in unfamiliar areas. Will know if better tomorrow.

Sorry to say, I think it is. I was running CM 6.1 stable and the 2 finger rotate wasn't working for me either, but I reloaded my saved stock rom backup and the 2 finger rotate works just fine now. Market updated itself with the stock rom too, and it wouldn't with CM 6.1

Great update. Since the vector based maps use less space, I wish they would just allow us to cache the entire US. That way we would never have any issues with offline navigation. Maybe someone will come out with an app that can piggy back on top of Nav to allow this? Why doesn't Google do this themselves?

Very excited about this after reading about it on Phandroid. I'll be downloading this update after working and playing around tonight.

i thought this wasn't working for me, but then i realized i live and work outside the arbitrary cutoffs they've set up for 3d of washington, dc. it drops out on 8th street in the SE and s street in the NW. but in the middle, it's pretty keen.

i really, really love the compass mode. and the rotation works for me. it's a little tricky with the two finger thing, but i managed to figure it out.

i don't know why, but i hope someone figures this out too

Yeah terrific!!
I went to satellite view and zoomed in on my office building and it shows an empty lot where my building is...interesting part? my building is over 3 years old!

Kinda makes you wonder how accurate Google maps can be if it shows a 3 or 4 year old view of something.

Just depends on how recently the satellite imagery has been updated. My neighborhood pics were updated a few months ago, but things continue to change.

And, I don't think the maps are based on the satellite pictures. I think they just get lined up. I think the road maps come from NavTeq or some such.

Must be CM6. I have stock and rotation works flawlessly.

I think the closeup imagery is shot from airplanes.

And the age of the photos is variable. For example, I know exactly when the images were shot over my house... During this past summer, right before July 4th, I was staining the deck. I had moved everything over to one side of the deck so that I could stain half of it. After I had applied the stain on the first half, but before I had moved the stuff back, they shot the photo and it's very obvious.

My home has been built for 9 years now. I live in a suburb of Cincinnati and it still has an empty grassy lot where my house is. Big Brother isn't watching me too closely ;)

No I guess not! Maybe your updates are coming soon. However I feel like my prior overhead pictures were newer than that. And my new overheads went up a while ago - if they were taken at the end of June, I probably happened to notice this fall.

Edit - maybe in September, Oct at the latest.

I've got some questions about how all this works, if anyone can answer them I'd be grateful.
1. Did the 3D thing in Houston - is there only 1 "notch"? I mean, I drag my fingers down and it tilts some, but won't go any further. So, just normal view and 1 3D view?

2. Where does it save the cached maps and how much room does it take? If I want to save an entire state instead of just a city/county, should I / can I delete some other stuff? If I'm going to an entirely new place can I delete the current cache to make room for storing more cache data for my new location?

3. I zoomed in and out on my current location - up to the entire state, then turned off wifi and 3G to test out the cache. Only the parts I had zoomed in close on were there when I turned off data. So, if I'm going to a new country, for example, I'll need to zoom down all the way in every area I'm going to be in while I'm on wifi so it'll be in my cache for later?

4. If I do this, is there a way to tell when my cache is getting full so I won't overwrite stuff I want with stuff I don't really need? Or a way to increase the cache size?

5. Once I have the data I need in the cache, can I do a Nav on it? (No, I answered this for myself by just trying it - have to have a data connection to get Nav started.)

As far as the 3D buidlings go, they only show up when zoomed in far enough. If you turn the scale bar on in labs, go in to about 200ft and major cities show the buidlings. The tilt is sliding 2 fingers down, and only tilts the view to about a 45 deg angle.

The cache doesn't seem like is a setting that can be changed, but I'm showing about 35 megs of cache stored right now, and I did a ton of looking around yesterday. I think they said it would store your most recent locations, so I'm sure old cache is changed out for new periodically, depending on where you look.
