Help Google Maps Navigation Causes Reboot

Stuntman

Android Expert
While driving I use the Google Maps Navigation app to get an idea of the roads ahead of my current position. The Navigation app has a few advantages over the regular Google Maps app. The screen doesn't time out and it always shows my direction of travel with upcoming streets towards the top of the screen.

What I noticed is that the last few times my phone has rebooted on its own, it has happened while I was using the Navigation app. Sometimes it would be a minute in. Other times it would be about 20 minutes in. None of the reboots happen when I was using turn by turn navigation. The reboot only happens when just using the Navigation app without turn by turn directions.

I'm using Google Maps version 5.2.0 (#5217), en_CA.

I just installed it. I'll try it out this afternoon and the rest of the week to see if it is more stable. It doesn't cause reboots all the time. Just sometimes and I noticed that the reboots as of late seem to happen only when I am using Google Maps navigation.

So far, it hasn't rebooted my phone on my trips yesterday afternoon and this morning. I'm going to try it out for the remainder of the week to see how stable it is.

Well, it happened again today. I'm thinking it was the latest Google Maps update. I didn't have any issues with the previous update. With the latest update, I noticed it wasn't locking on my location as well as before and today it caused my phone to reboot again.

This happens to me too. I have had no problems with the previous update, and now my phone reboots every time navigation is used.

I was hoping to find a solution here, however it looks like we need to wait for new update from google then?

I have not been having the reboot problem you describe but I have found that often, towards the start of the journey the phone reports loss of the GPS signal. If I continue driving the phone does not report the GPS signal returning whereas if I stop, quit the navigation application and then re-start the navigation application the GPS signal is back again immediately.

My suspicion is that the GPS hardware, or the driver for it in the kernel, gets itself stuck in some strange state and that re-starting the navigation application resets that state and all is well again. This same issue could be responsible for the reboots you are seeing. The loss of GPS I have been experiencing does not seem to be specific to Google navigation and happens in Co-Pilot live too so I doubt it is a bug in Google navigation.

I also wonder if this is related to the other issue reported in this forum of the phone failing to return from sleep in that, for me at least and others who have commented elsewhere on the net, this failure to return from sleep seems to happen more frequently when GPS is used.

I just installed the latest Google Maps version 5.4.0 and tried it out today. I definitely feel that it works better than the previous version. The previous version reboots and even when I restart it, I noticed that it has difficulties at times locking onto my location or maintaining the lock. In the previous version, I noticed that it often loses the lock. When I used the latest version today, it had not problem locking or maintaining the lock.
