Google Maps question

The wife and I were in Nashville recently using Navigation and all of a sudden the electronic female voice became a smooth, almost sexy human woman voice for one phrase, then it went back to the electronic voice. We looked at each other with a 'did you just hear what I heard?' look on our faces. It only did it for one phrase, then went back to the computer sounding voice. Is there some voice pack or way to change the voice in Google Navigation? I'd love to hear something other than a robot voice.

I have downloaded SVOX Classic TTS. You have to purchase the voices, unfortunately, but it is better than the "nails-down-the-chalkboard" default stock Text to Speech engines.

You can see what you have currently installed under System Settings>Text-to-Speech settings -- Engines. You can also force one engine to be default...

Here is a link to the SVOX voice options...

EDIT: I went with Victoria UK English for my selection. It seemed to be the most natural of those offered for the English version.

Thanks! That did the trick. Didn't realize it uses the TTS. Thought it was just part of its programming. Got a nice voice going now. MUCH better!

Did the one you recommended with the voice 'Grace', a nice female voice. Sounds a ton better than the previous robot.:D

Google Maps Nav does have some better voice prompts that occasionally seem to pop up but there's no surefire way to change the voice in the app.

As mentioned above, Google Maps Nav uses whatever is your default TTS engine. I also prefer SVOX Classic (and use the Victoria UK English voice). Loquendo had a TTS engine that was very good with the demo but clipped when I tried it with Google Maps Nav. Of course, that was quite a while ago. Things may have changed since then.

Switching out the TTS engine will benefit anything that uses it. I no longer use a ringtone and have Tasker announcing callers instead.
