Help Google Maps Sucks!

Whenever I open google maps to use the GPS, it is always sooo off. Are there any apps that I can use to actually get accurate gps readings?

Google Maps is fantastic. Define "soooo off" because it sounds like theres a problem with the GPS on your phone.
 
Google maps isnt off its the GPS on these crappy Incredibles. My Storms GPS was way more accurate than this is. But even with how crappy these GPS's are you arent guiding a missle, so I am sure it works fine for directions.
 
My GPS is accurate to within 6ft, according to GPS test. You have to give it about 20-30 seconds from booting the GPS to get a full lock. Otherwise its using cell towers for a rough idea. The blue circle is the current margin for error. It gets smaller as the Inc refines its position.

I have the exact opposite experience. The GPS on my Dinc is much better than my Storm.

That's funny, I can spit farther than the distance that my Incredible's GPS is off.
 
Just checked mine; it pinpointed me right down to my relative position on my couch through my roof.

So mine is definitely not off, more like pretty much always accurate within a few feet. Something must be wrong on your end.

Mine is accurate to within 10 - 15 meters but my Storms was within 2 meters. if you can spit 15 meters thats pretty good.

Seriously the first time I fired up my GPS I was saddened by how far it was off.

Hell, if could spit that far I would have a trophy. I'm talking about less than ten feet, more like six. I just tested it outside. Turned on Maps, waited about 40 seconds until I had a GPS lock. It located me a little in front of my garage (reality, I was standing at the garage door). I then walked out to the curb, Map was showing me about to ge run over by a passing car. Going indoors there is a little degradation in a wooden structure. But, the map will show me in whatever room I am standing in. And the arrow always points in the direction that I am holding the phone. I have noticed inside of steel structures it gets out of whack, which I find to be very acceptable. Not to mention that there are all sorts of interference, Solar activity, atmospheric, natural radio signals, EMI and the list goes on. I wouldn't expect reception of AM radio while driving through a tunnel either. Honestly, when I first got the phone I checked out the GPS and was blown away by it. I walked my property and the arrow held my every move very accurately. I can't imagine what the military has. I'm not saying the DInc has the best GPS on the market. I doubt that it does. I've just been impressed with mine. Maybe there is something wrong with yours (hardware or a calibration setting?) if it is that inaccurate.

+1 my storm was pretty horrendous. Obviously it didn't have the turnxturn since has, still you couldn't use it for directions very effectively because it couldnt track your movement. You'd be well past a turn before it registered. During the day on major roads this was fine, but at night in the country, if you couldnt see street signs, forget about it. Even worse was the bb maps. Couldn't get gps locked if you were already moving.

It doesn't get much better. But, since the Air Force owns all of the GPS satellites (in the event of war) they can scramble the GPS signals sent from those satellites so only their receivers will work. Imagine if no one had GPS except the military, it would throw everyone else who uses it for a loop.
 
Google Maps has served me well. Sometimes the routes it gives me aren't always very direct. Other than that, everything is fine.

Probably it is just my phone, I got it on launch day so I will probably just have to live with it as I doubt Verizon will do anything about it. But believe me when you get used to your gps being that accurate having one inaccurate is really a bummer. I don't even think about using it anymore.

I have heard that the military can read the label on a golf ball...might be just a rumor. But thats what i have heard. That they dont give civilians full use of the sats but down to like a +/- 1 meter margin of error where as theres is less than that.
 
Not to be a dick, but you're positive your GPS is active and you're not just using 3G to find position, right?

Mine has be within 10 feet north of the couch I'm sitting on right now using 9 of the 9 satellites it was able to locate.

If your GPS is on and you're still getting shitty location, I'd take it back to VZ. GPS is a huge feature on this phone, and if it's not working correctly, it's up to them to ensure you have a phone that does.

Yeah it is on, I have to take my daughters Env Touch back for the 5th time so I will mention my GPS problems to them also.
 
you can try calibrating it

download gps status from the market. run it. turn your phone clockwise and counter clock wise three timees. should fix it. search the forum for mor einfo
 
Mine can put me within 20-30 meters just about anywhere and will pinpoint it better if I'm out under the open sky. That seems good enough for driving directions for me. I wouldn't want to shoot a cruise missile within 30 meters of my target, but I can usually drive well enough to hit the parking lot and not the business.
