Is it possible to store Google maps to my SD card so I wouldn't need a data connection when navigating? If yes how much free space would I need?
If no, are there other alternatives?
 
Firstly at the moment you cannot backup maps to the SD card.

there are plenty of alternatives out there but the ones that are as good as the in built navigation cost money. Here's a list of the alternatives...

Android Sat Nav Apps

Persoanlly use Google Navigation as on a 1gb data plan. Been perfect evertime i've used it :D
