Google Maps Wont Close

If I longpress the home button it keeps showing google maps as running..

How do i turn stop this so it wont keep coming back I think its draining my battery
 
The box that pops up when you long press the home button shows the most recent programs used. If google was one of the last 6 programs used then it will show up there. As long as you backed out of the program correctly, it should not be running.
 
You can tell pretty easily if it IS running. Turn on your GPS and start up maps. you'll see the gps icon in the notification bar. When you exit maps, the icon should turn off. If it stays on then maps is still running.
 
Actually, there's no good reason to ever turn off GPS. All well-behaved programs, including Google Maps, Earth, Navigation, and Browser, automatically power down the GPS radio when not in use.

Turning GPS "on" does not actually activate the radio; it simply tells Android that the GPS radio is available for use when and if needed.
 
Thanks for the info.

Speaking of correctly exiting a program, what exactly is the correct way to exit a program. I just hit the back button or home button. Alot of the times when i open up atk it still shows the programs in there and i have use atk to close them properly

The correct way to exit a program is to press the back button till you reach the home screen. Some programs like Pandora have a quit option within the menu and will not close unless you select quit. Task killers do not close a program "properly". Android system is designed to automatically close programs as needed.

Don't obsess over what look like "running" programs in Android. This isn't like the Blackberry, where its essential that you kill background applications to preserve speed and battery life. Android is very efficient about minimizing the resources used by backgrounded programs. Only a poorly written or poorly configured program will be problematic. Read up on task killers, and I you will quickly learn that the programmers of Android are smarter than you (and me) about what should and should be "running" on their OS.
 
Please, please get rid if ATK. Despite what a very few posters are saying, this program that will only cause you issues. Just not necessary with Android!

lol soo true. Ive been a blackberry user for years and years.

Ive just been reading things "to preserve battery life get atk" or "make sure you dont have programs running" is there a legi thread you could point me too which actually has proper ways to preserve battery power on this device. I can search and search all day long through thousands of threads about saving battery life but alot of them are just personal opinions obviously since ive found that a task killer really isnt worth it

any link would help

I think you are misunderstanding him... He is trying to tell you that there is no such thing as a good task killer. They are all pretty useless since they perform a task that Android is already programmed to do. They can wind up doing more harm than good.

There is only one reason to keep any task killer on your phone, just in case a misbehaving app is draining your resources and you are unable to close it the proper way. This situation does not happen too often.
 
I'm very happy to let Android handle memory, loaded tasks, etc., I just wish it was a little smarter about it. It loads programs into memory automatically in order to make it faster to start them up when you call them, but it loads up stuff I never use. Wish it would learn what I use and start loading up those programs instead. That would be really slick.
 
Still, I don't like the idea of how some bloatware will automatically activate itself and start collecting data.
