Google Navigation "Searching for GPS..."

SIDE NOTE FOR ALL FORMER ALLTEL CUSTOMERS:
Just spent 2 days and went through 2 droid phones at the verizon store. Finally a high level tech support rep admitted that former Alltel customers are not able to use the GPS navigation on the droid. It is a known issue but oddly enough they are not making it known up front. This was after they had me switch from my great alltel plan (that verizon does not have) to a new verizon plan to try to fix it. I also had to trash my blackberry curve and my wife and daughter's phones and buy new phones for them because of the switch to the verizon plan.

That is really weird man. I am on an Alltel plan w/ my droid and GPS works fine. Only one time it did not work and that was after like 3 days of the phone being on. It would still use the cell tower to find my location, but it was off by a couple hundred yards. I restarted and it found sats in like 5 seconds.

This is confirmed by using GPS status, shows me locked onto 9+ sats.

So IDK if they are trying to give you the rundown, since I do not see how a plan would matter with the GPS locking on sats. Maybe for cell tower triangulation.

Oh and I am in Tampa Florida as well.

First off there is some misinformation about how GPS works here. Fadelight gave possibly the worst description ever on how it works. Heres a brief summary on what actually happens. GPS satellites broadcast two signals, one gives a catalog of the ephemeris data for the satellites... in other words, it tells your GPS unit exactly where the GPS satellites are. The other signal is nothing more than a time stamp. When you have recvd time stamps from 4 or more satellites you can figure out exactly what the "real" time is. Once you know the very precise atomic time you can then use additional time stamp transmissions from the satellites, and the time you recvd them to determine your distance from that particular satellite. If you can figure out the distance from 3 satellites you then know where you are (This is why the catalog of satellite orbits is needed... this catalog is preloaded on some devices so they can quickly acquire, otherwise it takes about 2 minutes of uninterrupted signal to get the full catalog). Any more than 3 satellites will reduce error (from about 100 m down to a few meters) and the geometry of available satellites (see GDOP) also determines error.

Ok, hope that wasn't too long winded but it should dispel some of the theories here.

Now, my problem is very similar to many others, it worked for awhile flawlessly with very little time to acquire a signal. However i started getting the same searching for gps. At first a cold restart would fix it, and now even that doesn't work. I'm not an Alltel customer and I'm not in FL (although it did work down there yesterday when I was there).

In my opinion this could be a few things... hardware issue such as a loose antenna wire, although this is unlikely since i would imagine it uses the same antenna for GPS, phone and wifi, and I haven't had any issues with the other two.

Given the fact that the cold restart did fix it a few times... it is most likely a firmware/software problem which can be fixed with an update. But Motorola/VZ needs to get on this ASAP or I'm guessing a lot of Droids will be returned before the 30 days runs up.

Glad to see someone else on here knows about the fundamentals of GPS. I do environmental work and occasionally do DGM (Digital Geophysical Mapping) with Trimble's, Base Stations, Repeaters, and handhelds (Trimble, Leicaetc) (know AALLLL about GDOP, PDOP etc).

I had my GPS take a shit this afternoon for about 4 hours. Google Maps/Navigation simply said "Searching for GPS" Earlier in the day it had worked fine. Always had previous gotten a fix in about 15s or less. My Droid is a 4109 (week 41 of 2009) production model.

Now here's the weird part, I could get GPS Signal SORT OF... Google Maps indicated that I was travelling North East somewhere in the midwest US. Like Misouri or something. GPS Status indicated that I was travelling @ 220 kmh... Although I was really standing still in the movie theater parking lot in Louisville, KY. Anywhere GPS Text WAS able to show me the current timestamp, BUT was NOT able to give me Lat & Lon.

Called VZW Tech Support, made sure GPS was turned on (duh, of course it was). Still no deal. I had already done a soft reset (removing battery and hitting power button with battery out, followed by restart) and it didn't help. Tech Support suggested I try a hard reset (Settings >> Privacy Settings >> Factory Data Reset).

Performed the Hard Reset, STILL didn't work. Went inside watched my movie, 2 hours later I come out and the GPS is working now. So frustrating because I don't know why it's manifesting this intermittent behavior.

FWIW I hung out in the parking lot for like 2 hours waiting on my movie. SHOULD have gotten a fix in that time. Makes no sense that after being inside a huge building w/ piss poor GPS reception (ie. Movie Theater) that it'd start working again once I came back outside.

Will keep you all updated.

kmfdmk, I still get a kick out of being quoted in your sig.

And yes I was just about to post about using GPS Status. if you don't have the sats flying over at the time, you can't do navigation stuffs.

Yeah I was so confused and frustrated about figuring out how to get an mp3 as a ringtone. Something so basic. It's still simple, but is a pain when I already have 8gb of mp3's on the phone. Wish it did folder navigation to then select the file, instead of one huge list.

FWIW I did have satellites overhead when it was acting up, stating that I was some 1000 miles away and travelling at mach ridiculous. (220 km/h). The really weird thing is that GPS Status had sat's overhead, showed my speed, and had my Lat & Lon, and had me travelling NE... but couldn't fix my position in Louisville. *shrugs* Weird.

Almost makes me think that there was poor reception from a few key satellites that was making the geometry go out of whack and make it appear I was pulling a superman move.

I have some bad news. My AT&T Tilt does the EXACT SAME THING everyone is complaining about. For those who say "I almost had a fix" or "it kinda knew where I was" please understand that your GPS was not working ... it was using cell towers to figure out where you were within 300 meters (which is a ridiculously large area; and far too big to be useful).

My Tilt also cannot get a GPS lock most of the time. This is a problem with any hand held device with an insufficient GPS antenna. This is ALSO a problem with any GPS device which is not always turned on where it was last turned off (so it has to start looking again). These 2 problems plague cell phones.

This is very unlikely to be fixed by a software update, and unless the nub antenna is going to make a comeback, unlikely to be fixed by a hardware revision.

I have to get used to the fact that these phones won't double for a GPS.

My question to all former alltel customers.

Are you still on an Alltel plan or did you switch to a Verizon plan?

I talked to senior level tech and he said that I have to switch from Alltel plan to the Verizon plan, in order for the Droid to work all the way.

I don't see how this could be an issue but apparantly it is.

Can someone summarize this whole thread?

I am from San Francisco and the droid picks up the GPS signal well here. I was in Orlando last week. On arrival, it picked up well from the airport to the hotel. But after that, it was hit or miss. I droved to Tampa, and it did not pick up at all. Then, on the way back from Tampa to Orlando, it took 30 min to pick up. In fact, I thought I had turned off the navigation on the droid until the robotic female voice told me to continue on the highway. I had my Garmin with me to compare the two, and the Garmin picked up after 2 min. Thank goodness for the Garmin. When I got back to SF, it picked up right away.

I love the phone with the exception of these things:

1. this GPS problem. I was hoping to get rid of the Garmin and unclutter my dash. This was the main reason I bought this phone (besides the phone functionality).
2. the darn camera. I know some of you are hoping for a firmware or app fix. But for a phone this expensive, it should already be fixed. Pictures are worse sometimes than the inferior palm centro I was coming from.
3. not displaying the state the call originated from. I love that feature from ATT.

I will be returning the phone after owning it for two weeks. I am coming from ATT and was on a month to month contract. Wondering if they will take me back with a month to month deal. *sigh*

Yeah it is definately a Florida thing... and mainly the Tampa Bay area. I have the same issue and I'm in St. Petersburg, FL.

Switching plans - I believe someone earlier in the thread mentioned that and they still continued to have the issue after switching from Alltel to Verizon.

Someone also metioned that they were told this will be fixed in a Dec 11th update. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

FWIW the techs/service guys @ the Verizon store I frequent here in Louisville, KY have no idea about the rumored Dec. 11 fix. When asked, they had no knowledge of a planned fix.

Alltel based plan provisioning and authentication are still in a separate system from VZ. No idea why they didn't integrate everything yet. At least this is for Data, and valid about a month ago when I had a data card on the Alltel plan still. I really can't remember what their systems are called, ugh.

I navigated successfully from Virginia to Texas over 4 days. I left the Moto Droid on power with GPS enabled and screen lit overnight. In the morning, and for 4 hours afterward it would not lock in successfully ("Searching for GPS"). Occasionally during that time it would lock briefly and place me incorrectly in Utah or Colorado.

I went through a long and unsuccessful process with Verizon 1st line support and 2 levels of Motorola support. They suggested that I try another GPS application. If both failed I was to go replace the phone at a Verizon store.

When I went to the store (after leaving the phone off for a few hours), it worked properly. It found satellites from within the Verizon store. Needless to say, I did not get a new phone.

I think what is going on is that the unit is overheating. This ties nicely with my experience (on charger overnight with screen lit and GPS enabled). In the morning and during my 4 hour trip the unit was hot. Nothing helped, disabling and reenabling GPS, removing and replacing the battery, removing power, hard reset, etc. This also ties in with the Florida experiences, where it is still hot at this time of year.

Anybody with failed GPS handled their Droid and found it quite hot?

Well, it worked for about an hour today... then right back to "searching for gps". Now that I've actually gotten to see it in action I am really upset that this thing does not work!

I'm in the Tampa Bay area and having the same issue as everyone else. I'm also a former Alltel customer. In the past two weeks my gps has worked for about 2 hours total (and it was really great when it work). Oddly enough it started working during a bad storm around the same time I got to a Verizon corp store to have my phone checked out. Their tech guy just had me replace the phone (which of course was not the issue), and my gps hasn't worked since.

It was a guy at a non-corp store that advised that I take it there to have the "extended nam" settings looked at. He advised that former Alltel customers default to Alltel towers and there is some issue with the authentication for the GPS. Of all the things I've been told from Moto, Verizon, etc this seemed to make the most sense. A lady working for Verizon showed me how to get to those settings (it's not in the regular settings menu, you need to type in a code on the phone and then a password). I would love to see if my settings match up with the setting of someone also in the tampa bay area that isn't having this issue.

I had the same issue for 2 days, and it got better after i uninstalled Advanced Task Manager and PandaHome. I'm not saying that's what fixed it. Later I exchanged the phone for anyways. The new one has no issues so far (I never reinstalled panda or ATM).

Hey any of you Tampa guys know how to take a droid 2.1 to being rooted and using it as a wifi hotspot, AND want to make a few $$$$ I would like myphone updated.

I used to have the same problem but in my case I found a solution. I have WeatherBug which relies on GPS. If I travel by plane, it would cause my GPS to go into the Searching for GPS mode. Now before I travel, I have to Force Stop on Weather Bug and as a preventative measure, under Location and Security, I uncheck the GPS box and the use Wireless networks in settings. When I land, I turn these back on and allow WeatherBug to update my location. Haven't had a problem since.

I found an answer! First let me say that what we are using IS a Beta version of navigation software bundled with Google Maps. We really cannot expect it to be perfect, but I did find a solution for mine. I reset my G1 to factory defaults and re-installed the application. I went to this extreme because I could not uninstall the Google Map application. It would not let me. Fortunately, I had previously purchased "My Backup Pro" and had backups of my applications and data. This is the way I suggest to do this. 1) Purchase "My Backup Pro" from the Market (Unless you don't care to backup anything). 2) Backup all of your data and applications. 3) Turn off your G1. 4) Hold the "Home" and "End" (Hangup Button) keys. 5) You will see a triangle and a picture of the G1 come up after a few seconds. 6) Open the QWERTY keyboard and press alt + W and it is then restored. 7) Sign back in to your Gmail account to sync contacts, calendar and email. 8) Download the My Backup Pro again from the Market.(They will have record of your purchase from being signed in to your Google account) 9) Open My Backup Pro and restore. You have the option to pick and choose what apps you replace. Don't replace the Google Map app with the restore. If the Google Map app is not already on your phone, go back to the Market, download it and update it. My Backup Pro will also restore your favorites, home page, system settings and other data. I hope this works for you!

I used to have issues under 2.01 the gps would never find a signal then I'd reboot and it would find it right away, 2.1 and 2.2 seem a lot better.

Someone mentioned that it should only happen the first time using the GPS...however I have been using none since getting the phone three weeks ago...and It is just getting worse. I am not in Florida, and I am not a former Alltel customer. I occasionally had this issue with my Eris, but never like this.

There's an easy fix for this, I can't believe nobody has posted it yet... Clear the cache and data for google maps, then reopen navigation.
Unless the problem is the GPS receiver itself which has always been the source of the problem for me. Using an app like GPS Status to clear aGPS data always resolves the matter. The GPS receiver and your GPS-enabled apps are entirely separate.

Actually, these days I just have aGPS disabled and my GPS receiver is much more reliable.

Been there, done that, got the tshirt. Still not working.

Hey...I have the same shirt!!! What color is yours? I have the same issue. It will not locate GPS. I uninstalled updates, cleared the cache, etc. I took my wife's Droid and it locked in immediately. This is very frustrating.

Settings > Applications > Development > uncheck "Allow mock locations"

Then restart.

This might have been posted before but im on my phone and it worked for me.

Have you tried GPS Status (or similar) and using it to clear your aGPS data?

If your GPS receiver is unable to get a fix then updating or clearing cache for your GPS app will have no impact. Your GPS app does not obtain the GPS fix -- the GPS receiver does.
