Google Navigation Tips & Tricks

Okay, I see why I probably don't see that new icon. I have downloaded/installed/rebooted several times but it still says Maps 4.1. It won't update. Any advice?

The icon does show up in the all apps menu ^ when you reboot after updating. However i don't think its a good replacement for the Car Panel that HTC already has in place. I know personally i'll just keep the car panel icon on my home screen instead as it gives you a few more options than the Google Navigation icon does.

Well that's odd. A battery pull seems to have cured it.

That part of the code must have been written by a guy that used to work for RIM :D

My problem was that it never installed after d/l. My pull down screen said the download was unsuccessful. After several attempts it finally installed. Thanks for the info... looks like a pretty good update.

That's why we're all different. I like the new icon's options much better than the car app, so have removed the car app on my home screen and replaced it with the new one.

There is a button to do a reroute via a different way under route info. You can also tell it to avoid highways or tollways.

Throwing something out there re: music playing while using Navigation:

Before I updated to 2.2, the music would be muted during voice directions, then would start again as mentioned in the initial post. Life was great. However, after updating to 2.2, the music app (both built-in player and Pandora) closes when the voice directions start and requires re-starting. I'm assuming it's something to do with sound processing within Android, since it affects Pandora and the stock music player, correct?

I have a similar issue with Pandora. After the navigation woman tells me directions, Pandora pauses and I have to click play to get Pandora back.

I updated to 2.2 as well and have the latest Maps and Pandora apps from the Market.

FOR THOSE WONDERING ABOUT STARRED ITEMS/FAVORITE LOCATIONS:
The same thing was bugging me for a while. There was no way to easily see and navigate to a list of my favorite locations. UNTIL!!
There's a program called GoMarks (I'm pretty sure it came on the phone...I don't think I downloaded it), which syncs with Google Bookmarks. If you have any locations "starred" in Google maps, they all appear in a neat little list when you open GoMarks. You can then rename them, navigate to them, view them in maps, etc.
Check it out, it's significantly easier and quicker than making separate icons and putting them in a folder, or trying to find them in Navigation.

Ditto on the music stopping issue. I'm running Sky Raider 2.5.2 on my incredible. This problem is a killer for me.

has anyone found a work around for this, I use the nav and music on my motorcycle and its a pita to try and reset the music all the time, and now with the cold coming I will be wearing gloves which will make it dang near impossible.

Another tip: if you tap the compass, you get a 2D map display (which I very much prefer). Haven't found out how to either a) make 2D the default or b) make it "track up" rather than "north up".

Is anyone else's wife/gf jealous of the Google-Nav girl?
My wife said, if only I would follow her directions so closely as I follow the Google-Nav girl. lol

I realize its a work in progress and free but there are a few items on my wishlist that I'd like to see. I currently have a MIO gps, so I'm looking for some of the things I like about that.

1. show street name of every street, especially when you have alot of streets in one area. This is especially useful when I'm in a city downtown area.

2. "Smart" zoom. automatically switch to overhead route view when your next turn isnt for several miles/minutes. Switch to 3d behind view otherwise. This is useful because I don't need to see local streets if my next turn isnt for an hour. Its more useful to show a zoomed out overhead view to track how far I am on my trip.

3. "smart" zoom. automatically goto overhead and zoom in when approaching a turn. This is nice because I can more clearly see the intersection. Especially helpful when navigating confusing traffic circles.

4. VIA points. Ability to add a point along the way or add the next destination. This is also nice if I want to take a different route than what is displayed. Being able to drag the route like in google maps would be nice too.

5. Traffic reroute. Ability to give you a better route based on traffic would be nice. Or give you the option. I understand this is hard to do though since not every street has traffic so you may be rerouted to a even more busy street that just has no traffic data.

So, is there a good forum that Google reads, or a suggestion web site to send Google suggestion like the above??? I just made a long trip, and would like to send them a few suggestions, too!

My wife somehow changed how fast she speaks directions (kinda sounds like shes on the crack rock now)....Anyone know how to adjust the speed in which she speaks?

No disrespect, but how about "adjust the speed at which she talks?"
