Help Google News & Weather

Is there a way to get the google news and weather app?

I quite liked it, a lot. I miss it and I really don't want to root. I know how, did it on my OG Droid. But if something happens to this phone, I don't have the money to replace it.

I looked in the Android Marktet. There is one there that is panned as a come-on to buy others. There are some news Apps that you might like there.

I don't use a news app. I use TV and FM radio for that.

I use Weather Bug Elite for weather and like it a lot.

Hey I am in the same boat. I loved the stock news widget on my X. I was very disappointed that it wasn't included on the Bionic.

I just tried it again (to a PC) and got it without problem. Suggest you try again.

I got it ...thx!

Now my paranoid question, I know it's from an "unknown source" for loading the app.

Is there a way to know if anything malicious is in the apk?

It reports versoon 1.3.01(PROD) and my Droid X reports 1.3.04(PROD).

They look the same.

The anser to your question is that you never know ... even from the Market (recently had a bunch pulled as you recall).

I personally will not keep this installed. I really like Weather Bug Elite.

Its not just about the weather, its about the ability to put in news articles that interest YOU. The bundles and selections provided with the Bionic's version of the NEWS widget is no where near as good as the News and Weather widget that was on the OG.

Have you checked out the news alternatives that are available in the Market? There are a bunch. I don't have a recommendation. Maybe someone else does.

No, I havent... I will though.. I just like the simple flexibility that the OG had. But will check this one out.

Thanks,

I've tried a few, none really compare to the OG Droid one. There's just something about having the weather and the news in one place and having it be everything I want to read.

When you said you wouldn't keep this installed, is that because it's malicious or you're just not interested?

Sorry for the confusion.

I only installed it to check it out. It is just not something that attracts me. I would not use it.

As I reported it seems a little older than the version on my Droid X (.1 instead of .4).

Just not sure why the original was not brought over.... Of course the News and Weather widget was part of the stock android O/S, no Blur or other skins on top of it.

Sigh...

They do what they do.

There is an FM receiver in the Bionic. They also did not bring over the FM Radio App. That one I did install and do use a lot.

I highly suggest Google Reader. It can take some time to setup and customize the contents to your taste, but once that's out of the way, it's a joy to use. Also, once you have everything setup in Reader, you have a number of different options available for displaying it (Reader app, Feedly, Newsrob, etc).

Another thing I've done is to create Google Alerts for topics I'm interested in. Then I take the RSS feeds for those alerts and subscribe to them in Google Reader. Works great.

I loaded both, the old classic Droid OG (customizable) Google News/Weather widget & the FM Transmitter app and I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER!

Thanks everybody!

Just installed Alarm Clock Plus to take the place of the Bionic stock dock screen, which falls short of my original stock Droid dock screen (I really miss the floating time).
However, I wish to have weather info on the ACP dock screen, but ACP looks for News and Weather app for that information. Anyone know if the linked apk above will be recognized by Alarm Clock Plus? And I totally agree with those that loved the original News and Weather. The weather info was great, and the news screens could be customized by topic. Widget was small and useful.

Update: downloaded the News and Weather app from xda and it works great and plays nice with Alarm Clock Plus. Thanks to all for this topic.

Thank you again for posting the link for the download (people: use your phone, not your computer)

It is IMHO the best news app b/c you can make sure you don't miss news on your favorite topic.

Thanks again!

Does anyone know why the "install" button on my Droid4 might not responding when I try to install this?

I had the app before, removed it, but have missed it, so I want it back. I think it's more accurate with the current temp reading than my weather pro app (more about predictions, I believe).

I have tried several apk installer apps. Some lead to this dialog box that wants me to choose an app to open it, and the apk installer app is not listed in it. But with Root Explorer I can click the apk file which gives me the dialog "this is a package installer, what action would you like to perform?" and I click install. It lands me in the right window, however, the "install" button does not respond, only the "cancel" button works.
In my settings under applications, the "unknown sources" box has been checked to allow installation.

I have not tried installing any other apps, so I am not sure to which extent I have this problem.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
