Google Nexus Local Storage

Since I'm a very beginner in the electronics world can someone answer these questions for me?

I know that the mini USB port on the bottom of the Nexus 7 is capable of hosting. Does anyone know if I can DIY a mini USB to female USB cable then plug in a 32 or 64 Flash drive?
- Could the tablet and its applications freely be able to access the data?
- Will the device or Mini USB port be able to deliver power to the drive?

I reckon you could just buy the $200 and make your own little dongle with the extra $50 you would have shelled out for the 16gb model. I know it may be a bit bulky and inconvenient but for me it'll be worth it if it works.

Hello dw13629, welcome to AF! I have moved your thread into the Nexus 7 device forum. Thanks for joining up! :)

The technology you are asking about is called USB OTG.
Part of the spec of OTG lets you plug in mice and keyboards.
On the Samsung S3 phone you can plug in game console controllers!

The other part of OTG lets you plug in removable storage, like USB memory sticks etc.

The Nexus 7 does support OTG in that you can plug in a mouse etc but it does not support OTG storage out of the box, i.e. you can't plug in a flash drive/USB stick etc. There is a solution though - if you root the tablet and install an application called stickmount it will work.

There is lots of information out there regarding rooting - what it does and what it means, please take the time to read it before you root a device.
