Root Google Now Guide - WIP

MikeRL

Android Enthusiast
Once I flash back to my old recovery and do a backup, I will flash fresh and attempt to load up Google Now on the latest MTDEV-CM9 build. I have an offline installer that can go to Mediafire and Dropbox, so you guys have a version of Google Now I know that works. Since there have been so many threads about Google Now not working, I have decided to explain how I got it working. This guide will be completed ASAP. I remember having to flash the ROM, and then either GAPPs first or Google Now. I will flash in a different orders until this thing works, and upload instructions for all to follow. Have a nice day.

Well, time to start! So as to not make extra work for myself, please refer to Google's help here for assistance with Google Now. Since we are using an older version of Google Now and cannot upgrade it (the team behind Now for ICS stopped working on it, which sucks) some of the stuff on Google's site may not apply. However, the basics remain the same. I will focus this guide primarily on downloading, installing, and working around issues with our version of Google Now.

Note that this version of Google Now is not my work. I am merely posting it here for everyone's convenience. By the way, this is the offline version.

If you are getting annoying update notifications for Google Now, simply swipe them away (literally) to the left or right. Then, they should not return. Also, if you flash GAPPs and Now in the wrong order, Google Now may crash. I recommend first flashing Google Now, then GAPPs. This is just a rough guide. Due to laziness and the busy schedule of my life, updates will come as needed. I cannot do another massive FAQ just for Google Now. However, that does not mean by any means that I will not answer questions when I have time. I am a lot of things, just not a complete jerk.

Another tip: if Google now constantly exits, try going to settings, Apps, and the category All (by scrolling to the right) and scrolling down until you get to Google Search. Tap it and clear the cache. That worked for me. If it still doesn't work, clear the data. If it still doesn't work, reflash Google Now.

Flash Rom. Then g now. Then g apps. Hope to see the guide.

Just a heads up I have tried many methods and the one that always seems to work involves adding Google now after first boot of rom...I delete old Google search apk and add new one...I then clear about 10 mb in system(runs smoother with more)...then I boot into recovery and clear both caches...with this method it does the optimization for ics on boot and seems fully functional...I'm sure there are other ways to do this but this works best for me...probably best to show all known methods due to the fact that some methods will work perfect for 9 of 10 people and others will require different one to get to work...also I have not been able to get functionality from offline version

What I did to get mine working is after installing a new Rom (unnecessary) I went into /system/app and deleted the googlesearchbox.apk, went into titanium backup and deleted voice search, rebooted into recovery, cleared dalvik cache, flashed google now (online version only), cleared cache/dalvik cache (again), reboot, went into the play store and installed voice search, and it now works like a charm.
