Help Google Play Services won't update

HughHyatt

Lurker
Numerous applications are giving errors, saying they require an update to Google Play Services. When I try to update Google Play Services, after a long period of time—½ hour or so—I get the following notification:

Error downloading “Google Play Services”
Update for “Google Play Services” could not be downloaded due to an error. (495)

When I tap the notification, I am taken to the Play Store and the following message:

Error
Update for “Google Play Services” could not be downloaded due to an error. (495)

The dozens of other apps with updates available won't update due to download errors, usually error 495. I can't download and install new apps.

I've attempted every suggestion I could find online, including: (1) clearing Google Play Services' data and cache; (2) uninstalling and reinstalling Google Play Services; (3) deleting and re-adding my Google account. None of these helped. I'm at a total loss as to what to do next, without resetting and wiping my phone. Any suggestions short of that would be appreciated.

Running 4.1.1 with a very strong wifi signal.

During one of your restarts, did you also try clearing the cache partition? (Shutdown and then restart pressing the Volume Up, Home, and Power buttons to enter your S3's Recovery Mode.) If you're rooted you'll also be able to wipe the dalvik cache.

Yes. It didn't help.

To solve problem of error Message ( 945 ) for google play :
go to settings > application manager > then clear data for ( google play store & google play services framework ) .
if that doesn't work , delete your gmail account then restart phone and login again .

Did you by chance make "google play services" a system app? You have to have root to do that, so if your not sure what I am talking about just say no =). I did that before and it would not update until I reverted the change.

Someone else might have ideas but I am out of them now. Maybe time to look into a factory reset.

It's not error 945 I'm getting, you know; it's 495 (this may seem like nit-picking, but these kinds of inaccuracies make me wonder if the writer knows what he or she is talking about or might have made other little errors in his or her post that will result in some disaster when trying to follow the suggested course of action). In any case I did clear cache/data for the actual Google Play Store app and for Google Play Services (I have no app named "Google Play Service Framework"), multiple times. I also deleted my Google account (not merely my Gmail account), restarted the phone and added my Google account back. Google Play Services still won't update.

Not that I'm aware of. My phone is certainly rooted, but I don't remember ever intentionally making any app a system app.

Yeah, I know. I was really hoping to avoid that.

I'm sorry ... i mean error ( 495 ) and ( google services framewirk ) .....

I have no idea what I did, but suddenly all my apps were updated and everything is running smoothly again. Unbelievable! Maybe it was clearing cache/data for Google Play Services Framework, which I had never tried before. Anyway, thanks to everyone who chipped in to help!

I know this will seem funny but I just had the same issue after a factory reset and I needed to go in and update each one. One at a time it worked for me.

NEED HELP. Cant access gmail. Say google play needs updating. Tried doing so and will not. My work comes to my email. l have a LG ACCESS LTE.

I was having the same issue. I ended up clearing the cache and data for the Play Services, force stopped the Play Store, rebooted, and when it booted back up I was able to tap the alert and update Play Services.
