Help Google play services.

Since getting the 4.2.42 update on my wife's S3 the battery drain has been dreadful. Google play services is now always top on the battery use table and whereas the phone used to go from 100% to c94% overnight it now drops to about 40% overnight and battery use indicator shows that Google play services has used about 90% of that. I have switched off Location Services and that has made a dramatic, but not complete, improvement but I don't really want that off permanently. I'm thinking of uninstalling updates but assume it will only reinstall when it realises. Does anybody know of a reasonable solution?
PS The same version of Google play services on my own S3 has had no deleterious effect on my battery!
 
It was killing my battery too and I am on 4.1.2 at the moment. I disabled location services which I see you have done also and it made a huge difference. It's kind of annoying though because I liked leaving wireless location services enabled and always had before this latest few updates. The only thing I can think of is to uninstall the update and then use something like Titanium Backup to freeze whatever app allows this to be updated in the first place. Sorry I can't be of more help.
 
Thanks for the response mydian. Seems like nobody else has any other solutions to add. So, I guess I'll just have to try rolling back. Wish I could go back to 4.1 easily, that didn't cause a problem on either of our S3's and hope you survive 4.2 better than you did 4.1.
 
Wait are you completely sure the s3 is on 4.2 and not 4.3?
I thought none of the s3s got a 4.2 update :confused:
If its 4.3, dont attempt to roll back. If it is on 4.2, update it to 4.3 (or roll back to 4.1) :thumbup:
 
Yeah to add to what Funky said.. do not attempt to roll back from 4.3 with Odin if you took the OTA update. You will brick your phone since Samsung changed the boot loader. You can however root and flash custom roms since those don't touch the boot loader.
 
To be clear. I am referring to Google Play Services version 4.2.42 (1013934-036).
I am not referring to the Android version (which is 4.3)
What I am considering is taking the Google Play Services app back to the factory version. I haven't done it yet because I'm not sure whether that will be better or worse than having Location Services OFF with just about acceptable battery useage.
 
Try clearing the data for Google Play Services and Google Frameworks. If that doesn't work you might need to try a hard reset and start over.

There won't be a need to hard reset. Just clear data and cache (where available) for those two services and, I would suggest the Google Play Store (these can be found under the All tab in Applications); the delete the Google account (the one that's linked to your Play Store account), reboot and re-add the Google Account and finally sign into Play Store. Everything should be fine now.
 
Thanks for this. I have just completed all of these. Now we'll see if everything is still working and if it has had the desired effect.
 
Well, something interesting happened but a reduction in battery useage was not it!
I have had to switch Location Services off again because the battery is disappearing just as fast as before. Interestingly, after deleting the caches and data on Google Play Services, Google Frameworks and Google Play Store, deleting the google account, rebooting and re-adding the account,etc. I noticed that Google Play Services seemed to have disappeared from the battery useage data but 'Google Services' had appeared with the same percentage figure. Since then the battery has gone down just as fast as before but now Google Services is top of the useage list and Google Play Services does not appear at all. I'm hoping that switching off the Location Services again will still work and at least bring battery use back to a reasonable amount.
