Google Talk Delay

My wife and I both have an Eris. We've been trying to use Google talk instead of SMS since we have a small messaging plan. When we send SMS text it shows up on the other phone within 2-3 min.

With google talk it takes up to 20-30 min if it gets there at all. Is anyone else having that problem or know how to fix it?

I have had the exact opposite experience when my wife and I use google talk it is instant within a few seconds. Regular text messages take anywhere from 1 to 20 minutes to get for us.
