Google voice advice

So I have had the nexus s 4g since it launched on sprint a couple months ago. Pre launch I was pretty excited about the google voice integration sprint was going to support. But I heard of all sorts of problems people were having, so I held off.

So what are peoples experiences porting your sprint number into google voice? Do your minutes get recorded differently, notably do you still get free cell to cell calls? Or does porting your number get rid of your cell phone status?

What about text messaging? I have heard google voice gets a little complicated when it comes to 3rd party messaging clients.

Any other tips or experiences with integrating voice with sprint would be greatly appreciated, just trying to figure out if out if it's worth it before I jump in and port my number. On that note, if I port my sprint number to google voice, can I un-port it?

Hey just my opinion being someone who just recently upgraded to a Nexus S 4g, update the Google voice and then skip the integration all together. It is extremely buggy drops calls for no reason if it decides you have been on the phone too long, you can't receive text messages while your on a call, keyboards such as Swiftkey will not work with Google voice unless you decide to have 2 texts forwarded to your phone which sort of defeats the purpose all together if you ask me. The version of Google voice that is pre installed will not allow you to only use voice mail I believe, but when you update it that option will be open to you.

BTW yes you can de-integrate if you port your sprint number to google voice so it's not a problem if you just wish to try it out, just remember once you port your number your original Google voice number will be lost after 90 days. Just something to think about.

I wish there was a way to switch the SMS away from gv using the phone connection. Reason I would like this was that I was in an area without data coverage for days. I could use phone but not get text msgs. If gv was disabled I would atleast received text msgs. Fyi, I was at north rim of Grand canyon for a couple days.

Thanks for the input, yeah sounds like I should continue to hold off. It's too bad google can't get this working properly, lot of potential.

There is. From the GV app on the phone, go to menu.. settings.. sync and notifications.. and check the box that says notify via text message. You can also adjust the setting from the GV webpage too, I just forget where exactly at the moment.

That is what I really like about GV with SMS, you can receive them via the data network and voice network.

Wait. I feel compelled to respond to some of these:

-I use Google Voice for all calls, and very rarely drop a call

you can't receive text messages while your on a call
If you have a nexus s 4g, you're on Sprint, which is CDMA... you're not going to get simultaneous voice and data. Has nothing to do with the phone.

What? I don't understand what you're saying, but, for what it's worth, I use Google Voice as my *only* SMS app, and I use swiftkey as my main keyboard. I text a lot and both work great.

Not sure where you're getting your info.. but, don't get it there anymore :)

I get texts while I'm on the phone all the time.

Ah yes, I was thinking of google voice sms. You're right, regular sms transmits over voice instead of data.

With an older copy of google voice apply you don't need the callback. All outgoing calls are made through the same number all the time.

For me, integration with Google Voice was a big part of my reason to go to the Nexus S and Sprint (former ATT iPhone user). i've been a GV user since the GrandCentral days, and love it. Admittedly, the apps are not perfect; I've had it on my iPhone, my blackberry and even the android app is a wee buggy, (actually the BB app is almost unusable). However; the ability to txt via wifi is huge for me as I travel a lot and like to use wifi on airplanes. When i'm not in airplane mode, I sign out of the android GV app on my nexus, make sure txt forwarding is checked to my nexus, and use the native sms app. Seems to work faster, better.

You don't have to sign out of the Google voice app to do that. Just use the app when working over wifi and use the texting app when not. If u have it integrated, both work fine without signing in and out.

I could not figure out how to use my 3rd party SMS app with GV set up. I ended up calling Sprint, and luckily got someone that knew how to turn off all the GV stuff. I do use YouMail and it works pretty sweet for texting me voice mail.

Just wanted to note, that with the latest GV app update from a couple days ago, they made it very easy within the app to disable notifications specifically for SMS and have them delivered to another messaging app while still being able to have the GV app notify you of VM.
