Help Google Voice and VM

Jargin

Newbie
With all new VM phones requiring plan upgrades I am thinking of porting my number to Google Voice first.

Is anyone using Google Voice and Virgin Mobile?

I'm curious how calls and text work. Does andriod support GV integration well replacing outgoing calls and texts with the GV number not the carrier number?

Does MMS work some posts from last year seem to indicate they did not?

I just realized I don't need to port my number to test, google gives you a free one.

My initial tests appear that it is seamless. Once the Google Voice app was installed I could send texts from the GV number (inside the Voice app) and the dialer was "upgraded" to ask if I wanted to use google voice or not. Note: it still uses my carrier minutes but that wasn't what I wanted, I just wanted the dialing to be integrated so I didn't need to use multiple apps.

Receiving MMS kinda worked the picture was sent via email. The Voice app does not have an option to send MMS though.

Well, I was using it quite nicely until about three weeks ago, on an Optimus. Then it stopped. The Google Voice settings page will not accept this device now for some reason. I think Sprint put the kibosh on it.

I'm using Google Voice on the Evo, and did so in the Triumph for about a year prior. The Google Voice integration is absolutely seamless for calls, especially if you tell it to make all calls through GV (so it doesn't pop up and ask every time.) Texts can be forwarded to your Virgin number so you'll get them through the messaging app, or you can just view them in the GV app, along with your voicemail. You can't send MMS, but you can receive MMS forwarded to your Gmail inbox, but only from Sprint customers. Virgin Mobile doesn't support voicemail forwarding, so to have GV catch all of your voicemail you'll need to disable your Virgin voicemail or set GV to pick up in fewer rings than Virgin. Alternately, you can disable the Google voicemail and let them all go to Virgin.

GrooveIP is what you want to make free calls over a data connection, it's $4.99 on the Play Store. It works pretty well, but I sometimes have people complain about the lag or echo. If it gets bad though, I just disable GrooveIP and call back using my voice minutes. Also a plus if you're out of Virgin's coverage area but have a WiFi connection.

I've been using Google Voice and GrooveIP since January. Initially on my Triumph, now on the EVO V. I even have it installed on my HP Touchpad with ICS. I love it. I have zero cell signal at home and spent a good three months searching for an alternative. GrooveIP when paired with Google Voice works great. There is a slight delay in voice, but it's getting better with each update.
Please follow the directions when setting everything up. Not complicated, but you've gotta get it right for it to work correctly!
