Google Voice cant verify number

I've tried multiple times to verify my new number. Every time, the phone goes from full service to no signal then "Message failed. Would you like to retry?" I have no idea what to do.

Suggestions?

That's correct, I have to verify my (new) number through the initial install of the GV app.

I remember using the google.com/voice and verifing with a phone call received or made.

What's going on here? What number is GV trying to "verify"?

If the app requires the mobile number, it's both intrusive and excessive. GV works from the desktop with no phone number associated. For privacy, I disabled my sim during the verification step to ensure google is not trying to collect personal information needlessly. This apparently causes it to fail... "failed to verify your number". The gv app is altogether a crappy load of bugs. It was quite a fight just to get it to authenticate my account due to various software defects.

Are there any non-google apps to access google voice? Something that doesn't attempt to dig around my phone and harvest data? I just want something that will connect calls directly over the net, without dialing through the pots network.

hey for one of my app which needs users mobile number verification( now i launched it only for india named poison ) i am using the mobile number verification service provided by cognalys (search for the name in google as i cant post urls here)and i am using it for the last 3 months and their service is good.
they have a good slideshare presentation to explain the scenario and from there only i came to know about this service

I think that they will have it sorted by now as the last post was 3 years ago!! LOL
