Google Voice, do not get too excited....

Google voice is more of a receptionist. GV re-routes you calls to any number you have set up. It will use your minutes. To get around that download Skype, it's free and will soon be available over the 3G network.

Actually, the Skype that is available to the Eris in the market is Skype Light, which also uses minutes (it calls a local number to connect you to your contact.)

If you are trying to connect to skye contacts over data, I think fring is a good choice - it can connect to your Skype contacts, I think even over 3G.

So I just got GV. I think I have it set up to get free texting. Have tested it on a couple friends and they did recieve the text with the GV #. Problem is that they don't recognize the number and that its from me. What is the best way to resolve this? I didn't see any way to insert a signature... or is there a way to re-route it using my own #? Any way that I can use it with handcent? This is kind of confusing for me so any info would be great! Also, when they reply, I get two notifications, one sms and one gmail, is that normal/correct?

Have your friends add your GV number to their contact list. Eventually they'll recognize you. Also go to the GV web page > settings > calls and set the radio button to show your GV number on outgoing texts. (Otherwise it shows a google number?)

I have no idea about using GV with Handcent for texting. I'm wondering that as well. I may just try it to see what happens.

With the two notifications, you need to go again to the GV web page > settings > phones > edit your mobile phone > uncheck receive SMS on this phone. Having this checked sends the second text to your regular number and will go against your text plan (if you have one) or cost $0.20 per text.

I work on an Offshore Drilling Rig , the phone system out here is set up to dial Houston as a local call ( that's where our office is ). So when I set up my account I picked a Houston #, so now even though I live in Alabama I can pick up any phone on the rig and dial my GV # and it will call my home phone in Alabama. That will save me a bundle in calling cards. We are 200 miles out so no cell service.

I thought about having them add that # as my second mobile # into contacts, that should work. What is the "radio button" you are referring to in the settings??? Didn't see that one in there.

Also, does anyone know if I add that 406 # (that my contacts get assigned through gv)to their contact info, if I can use handcent with that #?

Hi Topic Starter.

I have used GV for 3 months now, and I have noticed this too. But I never use much of my minutes anyway and enjoy the features of the GV online much more to text. Only my family has the actual cell phone number, everyone else has the GV number.

Just a matter of time for the kinks to work out for everyone, but to each his own taste.

Prank your friends :D

Prank your friends :D

This is what I did for Valentine's Day. I pranked a bunch of friends with dirty love messages from my Google Voice numuber. Some went along with it and some of their wives saw it and got concerned. One even called me back and then I had to let her in on it. Was a fun day for me!

if your using the official app to make outbound calls, even if you have your gv number set in your fav 5 your going to get charged. You need gv dialer and then it will actually dial your gv number out and punch in all of the info for you.

in order to recieve free calld you have to have it setup to ring your phone with your gv number.
I dont have gv handling all of my texts just yet because im waiting on the end of my billing cycle. It will save me $10 a month though, dont sound like much but $120 a year puts it in better perspective. My origional intentions for this was just so i could have a different number to give my customers instead of my personal cell. I can make it so it wont ring when im asleep but my normal friends can still call if needed. The tricks on making it free were just a bonus to me.

I thought gvoice used voice over ip using the 3g data connection, why is it that it will still use min? When I use the google voice app I noticed the 3g icon in the staus bar transfering data.
Anyway I don't care too much if it uses min, I gave up using gvoice because the call quality sucked. I could hear people just fine, but nobody could hear me clearly and the volume was too low. I ended up having to call everyone back from my verizon number everytime I got a gvoice call.

I have found the most convenient thing about google voice is the voice mail and texting. My wireless number now sends all voice mail to google voice. So I get everything in text/transcribed. I also use google voice for all my sms needs. Absolutely wonderful service!

Right now, GV doesn't seem to work for voice. It shows your VZW number, not your GV number. Kinda defeats the purpose, because I'm sure texting is the same way.

The latest gv app has never really worked right. However, I don't use the calling/receiving calls through the app anymore. My text messages all show my gv number.

Since the app is not working perfectly I only make calls with gv using the website, and have never had a problem that way.

It NOW works perfectly on the Incredible....

I mainly use GV for 2 things, texting and for receiving calls on 3 phones (work cell, work desk, and eris). It's still great.
I got a quick question. Do I have to start the GV app and then I can send out and receive free messages? Can GV messages be merged into the cellphone's msgs too? Which means that I dont have to start the app every time I need to send and view the messages?
Thx

To use Google voice for text you have to use the app. If they come through your regular message app then they aren't free.

Just find an .apk for the older version, still works perfectly. :)

if you guys have the friends and family plan, add your google voice to number to one of the 10 slots you have. problems solved :)

Can I use my google phone number for my business and keep my Verizon provider phone number as my personal number? Can I use my Eris to get my google messages and make calls?

I'm reading everything I can find but it would be great if someone could explain how a google phone number works for those learning impaired. Seriously, give it to me like i'm a second grader.

Google Voice still doesn't work for Verizon numbers here. Its been 3 weeks now. I really want to use visual voice mail because verizon's is a PTIA.

Yes, but I'm not sure I see the point. They both ring the same phone. And you can set it to differentiate the two, but then you won't actually know who is calling on your business line until you answer the phone.

Yes.

To make calls via Google Voice, the Google Voice app connects to the GV server and initiates the call. Your phone auto answers from the GV number, and the GV server automatically calls the number you wanted to call.

You can set GV up so that it asks if you want to use GV to make each call.

The GV App receives text messages from your GV number, and receives transcripts of your Voice mails (these may or may not be useful. Some are, some aren't. Some callers are nearly always spot on, and some are always way off).
